My Introduction praises Jamaica Kincaid’s prose poetry and her skill at fantasia, which places me at odds with all the contributors to this volume, who value her primarily upon an ideological basis.
It is difficult for me to distinguish clearly between the dozen essayists, and I am too old not to speak my mind. Their targets are the usual suspects: colonialism, maternalism, racism, economic exploitation. All the essayists are virtuous, and I respect their moral intensity. Here they are: this is how and why Jamaica Kincaid is now esteemed.
