Lata 60-te George Jung (Johnny Depp), syn robotnika z Massachusetts, przybywa do Kalifornii, gdzie zaczyna sprzedawać marihuanę. Wkrótce George staje się hurtownikiem i wraz z przyjaciółką Barbarą (Franka Potente) buduje sieć narkotykową, obejmującą cale Wschodnie Wybrzeże. Pod koniec lat 70-ych Jung trafił do więzienia za posiadanie marihuany. Po krótkim pobycie za kratkami we wczesnych latach 80-tych jedzie do Kolumbii, gdzie nawiązuje kontakt z Pablem Escobarem (Cliff Curtis). Tam poznaje Mirthę (Penelope Cruz), która zostaje jego żoną. Podejmuje się wprowadzenia na rynek nowego narkotyku - kokainy. Obecnie jest jedynym Amerykaninem, który na przemycie narkotyków i współpracy z kartelem z Medellin zarobił miliony dolarów.
