Where to start with Vincent Gallo? Actor, director, writer, huckster, musician… depending on where you came in, you may have a polar opposite take on the guy, and what he does, than the next person. We wrote about him before (HERE) in a review for the soundtrack to his wonderfully twisted film, Buffalo 66, and his “debut” 2001 solo album, When. That post also has links to some of his x-rated work and his website – where he offers himself as a weekend escort for $50K (ladies only) and sells his sperm (for seven figures). But those bizarre escapades don’t hold a candle to his work as a musician. Gallo’s ghostly experimental song craft is mesmerizing, on one hand, otherworldly, on the other. I’m a big fan, if only because it’s virtually impossible to predict what he’ll do from one minute to the next. This release is, most believe, Gallo’s recording debut from 1982, It Took Several Wives, by his three-piece experimental collective, Bohack. Noise enthusiasts and tape manipulators might be intrigued by this primitive sound fest – a form of music Gallo still sometimes trafficks in, though the new millennium Gallo also specializes in surreal grooves and excruciatingly tortured love songs, enhanced by his confusingly feminine singing voice. Bohack, however, is just hard-wired noise (which you can find – almost exclusively – on Gallo’s website, HERE, for $520). What we have are ancient hard drive files, split into A & B sides (though actual song titles do exist). Listen to it all below, if you dare. As I mentioned in the previous review, I find Gallo and his work compelling. 8 out of 10 probably won’t. You make the call.
