Brahms - Handel Var & Fugue - Shura Cherkassky, p (1962, live) [Philidor; FLAC]

Shura Cherkassky was one of the legendary pianist Josef Hoffman's greatest pupils. He lived through years of neglect after the rise of what might be called the percussive school of pianism, only to experience greatly expanded interest in the last decades of his life. A touring artist who lived out of an hotel, he practiced incessantly, and spoke little about his art. Fortunately, the BBC began broadcasting his live studio recitals, leading to a fair body of work that shows his talent in full. The upper treble partials are missing from these analog releases, but the sound is clean, and the performance of the Brahms, exacting.
