During the Sung dynasty, a young man named Kuo Ching (Alexander Fu Sheng) is raised and trained by a group of kung fu experts following his fathers murder. One day, Ching sees one of his instructors murdered by the Skeleton Claw move, in which the killer straightens his fingers, making them rigid enough to penetrate both flesh and bone. Ching defeats the assassin, then encounters a titled noblewoman named Yung-er(Tien Niu) who is disguised as a pauper. They are subsequently taught by Hung, the Nine-Fingered Beggar(Ku Feng), who can smash a tree into splinters with a single chop of his hand. Ching gains still more knowledge from the master Cho(Phillip Kwok) which prepares him for the three tests he must face and overcome in order to win Yung-ers hand in marriage. The all-star cast includes Danny Lee, Dick Wei, Johnny Wang, and Ti Lung, but most viewers will want to watch for the energetic star turn by Alexander Fu Sheng, whose international stardom was just starting to peak when, ominously, he moved into a house once owned by the late Bruce Lee and known for its negative feng shui. Shortly thereafter, Fu Sheng died tragically young when he crashed into a cement wall in a vehicle driven by his older brother. This film remains one of Fu Shengs best-known efforts, and led to three sequels. His ghost is still rumored to walk the Shaw Brothers backlot, and his makeup cubicle was left empty for years to appease his spirit. ********************************* She diao ying xiong chuan xu ji AKA Brave Archer 2/The Brave Archer Part II Kung Fu Warlords II/The Brave Archer II ******************************** Release year.........: 1978 Genre................: Action/Drama IMDB rating..........: 6.2/10 IMDB Link............: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078250/ HKMDB Link...........: http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=5883&display_set=eng Language.............: Chinese Subtitles............: English .srt* Duration.............: 1h 50mn Source...............: DVD R0 Bootleg Format...............: MPEG-4 Format...............: Base Media File size............: 663 MB Overall bit rate.....: 838 Kbps Writing application..: HandBrake 0.9.6 * Downloaded from unknown uploader at AT. The Brave Archer II continues the story begun in The Brave Archer and basically plays as a long middle chapter in a continuing serial, all based on the epic 1957 serial, "Legend of the Condor Heroes," by Jin Yong, aka Louis Cha. Brave Archer II doesn't open with intros of the characters the way the first film did, but simply gives us the title and then launches into a fast-paced recap of events from the first film, going so far as to finish with incidents that happened after the end of the first film but before the start of the second. There are lots of characters, all with different agendas, and it is hard to keep track of them all. Since it is a safe bet nothings going to be resolved by the end of this film, there's no real plot arc to single out. One just simply follows the characters on their various journeys. If I had to pinpoint one narrative thread, it would be the growing bond between hero and heroine, Kuo Tsing(Fu Sheng) and Huang Yung(Niu Niu), and, more importantly, Huang Yungs role as newly appointed chief of the Beggars Clan. ****************************** She diao ying xiong chuan san ji AKA Brave Archer 3/Blast of the Iron Palm ****************************** Release year.........: 1981 Genre................: Action/Drama IMDB rating..........: 5.9/10 IMDB Link............: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079896/ HKMDB Link...........: http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=6308&display_set=eng Language.............: English Dubbed Subtitles............: None Duration.............: 1h 32mn Source...............: DVD R1 Format...............: MPEG-4 Format...............: Base Media File size............: 575 MB Overall bit rate.....: 869 Kbps Writing application..: HandBrake 0.9.6 'The Brave Archer 3' is the final part of Chang Chehs adaptation of Jin Yongs 'Legend of the Condor Heroes'. An adaptation that it quite faithful to the original source material. There are of course some subtle changes and omissions as are common with big screen adaptations from literary works. Perhaps the biggest omission from this series is the presence of Genghis Khan who was a major character in the novel. However since his character has little effect on the main narrative, it is not such a detrimental omission. In fact another major character may have even made 'The Brave Archer' an even more challenging viewing experience. A painting that Tsing(Fu Sheng) and Ying(Niu Niu) discovered in the previous instalment, was found to contain information on the whereabouts of General Yues Posthumous book. It states that the book is located in the Iron Palm Clans headquarters. While retrieving the book Ying is seriously wounded as she is struck from behind by Iron Palm Clan leader Qiu Qian Ren(Lo Mang). On escape they come across the hut of Auntie Yee(Ching Li), whos hospitality is cut short when she discovers who Yings father is. She does however tell them to find Southern King Emperor Duan Zhi Xing(Ti Lung) who has the power to save her. After making their way up the mountain and having to pass Duans four disciples one by one, Duan agrees to help her against his disciples wishes. It becomes apparent that by saving Ying, Duan will lose his internal power for five years making him venerable to attack. This is in fact Auntie Yees plan as she holds a deep rooted grudge against Duan. ***************************** Shen diao xia lu AKA Brave Archer 4/Kung Fu Warlords IV Brave Archer and His Mate ***************************** Release year.........: 1982 Genre................: Action/Romance IMDB rating..........: 5.0/10 IMDB Link............: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079899/ HKMDB Link...........: http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=6341&display_set=eng Language.............: English Dubbed Subtitles............: None Duration.............: 1h 40mn Source...............: DVD R1 Format...............: MPEG-4 Format...............: Base Media File size............: 627 MB Overall bit rate.....: 869 Kbps Writing application..: HandBrake 0.9.6/Yamb 2.1.0.0 Brave Archer and His Mate is an unofficial sequel to the Brave Archer film trilogy, and last film in the Brave Archer series directed by Chang Cheh and based on two novels by Louis Cha (Jin Yong), "Legend of the Condor Heroes" and "Return of the Condor Heroes,". Drawing on "Return of the Condor Heroes" and introducing a new hero and a whole new story arc. As a result it comes with a complete and total change in casting. The young kung fu couple dominating the first three films, Kuo Tsing and Huang Yung, were played by Fu Sheng as Kuo Tsing in all three films, Tien Niu as Huang Yung in the first, and Niu Niu as Huang Yung in the second and third Brave Archer films. Here the film opens with two completely different actors in these roles, Kuo Chui(who played crazy old "Uncle Naughty" in all three of the earlier films) and an actress who is completely new to me, Huang Shu-yi. Other characters from the first films are played by different actors here as well. Fu Sheng is on hand, but he plays Yang Guo, son of Yang Kang, Kuo Tsings sworn brother, turned bitter rival. Yang Guo is seen as a baby in the opening sequence in which his parents die in an encounter with various other parties including the lead couple, Kuo Tsing and Huang Yung, and Yang Guo's dying mother turns the baby over to them to raise him. When next we see the boy, he is grown up to be Fu Sheng, who, in order to appear as a believable teenager, flounces around, makes funny faces, and acts in a petulant manner. His adoptive parents dont want to teach him kung fu because they fear he will be a bad seed like his father so they teach him only Confucian precepts, while his sister (the couples biological daughter) and two other boys learn kung fu from Uncle Kuo. Eager to learn kung fu himself, Yang Guo sneaks off to Iron Spear Temple where he encounters Ouyang Feng, "Western Poison"(Wang Li), who'd been in the fight at the beginning of the film and been trapped in the temple ever since and only vaguely recalls enough of the details to give young Yang Guo a version distorted enough to lead him to think his adoptive parents killed his real ones. Western Poison also teaches him frog-style kung fu. ******************** Yang guo yu xiao long nu AKA Little Dragon Maiden/ Little Dragon Maid ******************** Release year.........: 1983 Genre................: Action/Fantasy/Romance IMDB rating..........: 6.4/10 IMDB Link............: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084256/ HKMDB Link...........: http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/view.mhtml?id=6535&display_set=eng Language.............: Chinese - Cantonese or Mandarin Subtitles............: English .srt Duration.............: 1h 32mn Source...............: DVD R2 Format...............: MPEG-4 Format...............: Base Media File size............: 618 MB Overall bit rate.....: 938 Kbps Writing application..: HandBrake 0.9.6 Little Dragon Maiden, also known as The Brave Archer 5, is a 1983 Hong Kong film adapted from Louis Chas novel The Return of the Condor Heroes. Little Dragon Maiden and The Brave Archer and His Mate(1982) are seen as unofficial sequels to the Brave Archer film trilogy(The Brave Archer, The Brave Archer 2 and The Brave Archer 3). This movie is a highly condensed version of Jin Yong's "Shen Diao Xia Lu" (Return of the Condor Heroes). The story is wonderful, complex, immersive, and so realistic, I have to be careful to not let the quality of the story make the movie seem better than it actually is. The story is how Yang Guo works hard through many trials, tribulations, and adversities to become one of the top fighters in the martial arts world. Gorgor plays a wonderful Yang Guo, every bit as good as Andy Lau Tak Wah, and in the emotional aspects, a far better Yang Guo. Cheung is simply a better actor in this type of role. Weng JingJing who plays Xiao Long Nu is really gorgeous...maybe too much so for the role. In fact, the first time Cheungs character looks at her, he has a look on his face similar to the one I had on mine when she first appeared on the screen. The chemistry between the two is quite real and believable here. But for those familiar with Cheung, he is all about creating chemistry on screen--even this early in his acting career. In other areas the movies is a bit more disappointing. The interactions between Hong Qigong and Ouyang Feng are too silly. Li Mochou is just not mean enough, and Huang Yaoshi meaninglessly appears for a few seconds. In other words many loose plot ends. But...with a story like this it is unavoidable. At the core this is a love story that hits the highlights of the novel. And all that really matters is the performances delivered by, and the excellent interactions between, Cheung and Weng.
