One night after dinner on board a merchant ship moored on the Thames, the narrator begins to make his way home along the river in a dinghy. But as he sets off, another guest, very drunk, pushes his way into the boat, seizes the oars, and in seconds they are adrift on the river, and on a current of farce and indignity that continues through the tale.

Our sorry narrator has to resort to drastic means to keep him at bay…and to keep his own sanity!
