A very interesting six story series in which trace the vision behind great British icons. Presented by Julian Richards.

From the time of Stonehenge to the building of Concorde people have left their mark on our landscape and our heritage. They built cathedrals and cut railway tunnels, they built a road with just one objective: to subdue the ancient British tribes; and they stopped the river in the centre of Bristol to create the Floating Harbour. Now Julian Richards explores the detail of these great endeavours and discovers a common theme - a driving vision behind each icon - understand that and you learn something about the Age.

Computer Generated Imagery is built into the fabric of this series. Julian will inhabit both the real world and the builders plans. He will discover the precision that went into the construction of Stonehenge; he will peer down shafts on Brunels plans for Box Tunnel; and he explore the sleek, blue print lines of Concorde as we evoke the race to beat the speed of sound.

These are films that bring the past to life and help us understand why we treasure these very British icons.

Box Tunnel (27th August 2008)
Julian Richards walks the plans of Box Tunnel, which was built for the original route of the Great Western Railway, and was the longest railway tunnel in the world at the time of its construction.

Built in 1836, Box Tunnel runs between Bath and Chippenham, and measures nearly three kilometres in length. The lives of around 100 railway construction workers were lost during construction, but did Brunel need to build it?

Gloucester Cathedral (29th August 2008)
Julian Richards walks the plans of Gloucester Cathedral to explore how the building has developed.

Masons have been extending, improving and repairing Gloucester Cathedral since it was built over 900 years ago. Julian discovers how a rebuild in medieval times was so revolutionary it changed the course of British architecture.

Computer Generated Imagery is built into the fabric of this series, as Julian inhabits both the real world and the builder's plans.

The Floating Harbour (28th August 2008)
Julian Richards sails up the Avon to uncover the expertise that went into creating Bristol's floating harbour.

The harbour, which was once the world's largest impounded port, came to life two hundred years ago, when William Jessop oversaw the flooding of the River Avon to give the city a new heart.

Concorde (7th October 2008)
Julian Richards meets the aero-engineers who in the late 1950's successfully designed the world's first supersonic airliner, Concorde.

He learns how, without the computer-aided design systems their modern counterparts take for granted, they developed the systems to allow a passenger plane to fly safely at twice the speed of sound.

Key questions included what shape the wings should be and how to make the supersonic engines efficient.

The Fosse Way (25th September 2008)
Julian Richards looks into the past, and uncovers how the Romans were able to build the Fosse road so straight.

Richards also discovers how a kink in the road, which links Lincoln to Exeter, throws light on how the Roman conquerors treated the Celts they had invaded.

Stonehenge (19th August 2008)
Julian Richards walks the plans of Stonehenge, and asks if there really were bands of carpenters and stonemasons building henges in wood and stone.

Computer Generated Imagery is built into the fabric of this series, as Julian inhabits both the real world and the builder's plans. He also discovers the precision that went into the construction of Stonehenge.
