Description
Redone. As I previously encoded video contained Russian hardcoded subtitles in the video during a few segments.
Recoded from the 4.3GB LIMITED 720p BluRay x264 REPACK-XPRESS version. That MKV has 3.88Gb x264 video @ 4373kb/s and so is slightly higher video bitrate then the 6GB "Capitalism.A.Love.Story.2009.BDRip.mkv" (Russian) version I previously used. The Repack version has one english 448kbps AC3 audio stream, versus two 1.34GB 6ch DTS tracks for the russian version russian. The audio I kept, and so originates from the uncompressed 1500kbps DTS stream.
Video: It's possible to have HD resolution and keep the filesize small by encoding to constant quality. (versus a target filesize) This as most of the source material anyhow is lowres video. In this version you get those few clips that ARE HD in HD and the ones in lowres taking less space.
the x264 coder has about one pixel blur when coding to 50% quality. 60% is already almost indistinguishable from the original, with Q=70 you start to encode also all the static and artifacts. As most of the material is not high quality anyway, I chose a slightly lower setting then i usually use (q48 instead of q50). The previous version was q47, but used less exhaustive motion estimation, this version took twice as long to encode. Oh And I used a 3.1 profile instead of 4.1. Should make for better compatibility with Hardware decoders.
I recommend SMplayer for playback.
*And so this version is a few Mb smaller, but should be better quality!*
Audio: Same story: Most of the audio is not high quality to begin with, As a Note: I checked out the 2Gb,3Gb, and 4GB versions, most have BOTH a 2 and an 6 channel audiotrack, effectively wasting space by adding one track you'll not be listening to. (If you'd like higher quality I recommend the 'repack' version) I used Nero aac encoder and have only one 6channel track. For Those who have only stereo, the player will mix it down. no big loss here for a documentary with mostly talking. I used the constant quality setting, although this is really a ABR setting, not a true CQ VBR (constant quality variable bitrate). using Q=30 resulted in an average 172 Kbps stream with a peaks upto 285 Kbps. Didn't hear any annoying artifacts. (using earphones. I know how aac artifacts sound like, but have no decent 6ch testing equipment)
Anyway, preffered download size is a personal choice, if you feel you are missing out on something, go ahead and download the 2,3 or 6GB 720p versions. But as I like to archive, I usually pick the smallest 720p HD source.
IMHO I offer the best quality/filesize tradeoff by not coding to a target filesize but a target quality.
Because I like this documentary I took the time to re-encode the highest quality source I could find down to the ideal size and add the subtitles for some languages.
