Val Lewton and Jacques Torneur's 1942 horror film opened a new chapter in screen terror. Though it seems tame today, the director's subtle, psychological approach tried to implant sights in the mind the eye possibly didn't see. Much intimated, the film was widely influential. Though shot as an RKO "B" picture, the craftmanship is impeccable.
