Five years after a Beslan school was attacked by gunmen with thousands taken hostage and hundreds killed, we return to meet the children who survived.

On September 1st 2004 a group of heavily armed extremists stormed into their school. More then a thousand children and adults were held hostage in a sweltering gym, denied food and water. The harrowing siege ended on September 3rd with a series of explosion and a hail of gunfire that killed 171 children and over 200 adults.



Ewa Ewart, director of the award winning Children of Beslan first met them in the months after the attack. Today, once again the children tell their story – how they have struggled to deal with their pain, the unanswered questions and their views of the world from where they stand, on the far borders of Russia.



Beslan teenagers talk about their hopes and fears for modern Russia and a new sense of victory. They have spent the last five years trying to recover from the trauma of the memories and overcome the loss of those murdered in that atrocity.



Today they share their plans for the future and offer unexpected views on this increasingly volatile part of Southern Russia where they're trying to rebuild their lives.
