Il regista (Zach), seminascosto nel buio della platea, sottopone tutti ad una massacrante selezione, dalla quale alla fine escono fuori sedici ballerini. Ma i prescelti saranno otto soltanto, che dovranno accedere alla finalissima ancora con ansie e fatiche incredibili. Zach esige ora che ciascuno parli di sè, della propria vita ed esperienze, motivando il "perché" di una scelta professionale. Intanto è arrivata in teatro Cassie, una ballerina di qualche anno fa (molto brava e innamorata di Zach), che aveva lasciato lui ed il proprio posto di lavoro per andarsene ad Hollywood. Ora ha bisogno di danzare per sbarcare il lunario: essa deve vincere la indifferenza ed il rancore di Zach, che a lei era intimamente legato, ed implorare di ricomiciare umilmente in gruppo con gli altri.
