It was published in 1996 by Sierra Entertainment and was followed in 1997 by Grant-Lee-Sherman: Civil War Generals II. The tagline of the game reads, "So realistic you can smell the gunpowder!" According to the front cover of Civil War Generals II, Civil War General was the "best selling Civil War game of 1996."
