Club Protocol Release: Empire of the Sun KINDLE MOBI by J. G. Ballard H.A. (Size: 501.52 KB)
DescriptionEmpire of the Sun (1984) by J. G. Ballardwh was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize. It is essentially fiction but draws extensively on Ballard's experiences in World War II. The name of the novel is derived from the etymology of the name for Japan. The novel recounts the story of a young British boy, Jamie Graham (named after Ballard's two first names, "James Graham"), who lives with his parents in Shanghai. After the Pearl Harbor attack, Japan occupies the Shanghai International Settlement, and in the following chaos Jim becomes separated from his parents. Trying to survive in the abandoned homes of the former International Settlement, Jamie finally realizes the only way he can continue on is to be interred in a Japanese prisoner of war camp, and much of the story is then taken up with his experiences and relationships during his time in the camp. After a forced march when the Japanese army food supply runs short, the victorious American army drops food which gives Jamie the strength to return to the camp where he and other children are rounded up to be reunited with their parents. Empire of the Sun was adapted into a very successful film (1987) starring a 13 year old Christian Bale in a breakout role. The film was directed by Steven Speilberg and nominated for six Academy Awards. Enjoy and please reseed Idea: Add Advanced Search Function for Country of Origin and Language for BOOKS!
