Tom Holt (Thomas Charles Louis Holt), is a British novelist. He was born to novelist Hazel Holt in London on the September 13, 1961. He studied at Westminster School, Wadham College, Oxford (where he discovered bar billiards) and The College of Law, London. Talented authors in the humorous/fantasy genre are few and far between. Tom Holt produced his first book Poems by Tom Holt, at the age of thirteen, to his horror, was hailed as a child prodigy. At once, he changed from poetry to comic fiction, beginning with two sequels to E.F. Benson's Lucia series, and continuing with his own distinctive brand of comic fantasy. Tom Holt published Expecting Someone Taller in 1987 which was the first of a lengthy series of humorous fantasy novels. Holt's works include mythopoeic novels which parody or take as their theme various aspects of mythology, history or literature and develop them in new and often humorous ways. He has also produced a number of "straight" historical novels writing as Thomas Holt. "When I was at university there was a pool table in the room behind the bar. We found that if we stuffed newspaper in the pockets, we could play all day for free. So we did, when we should have been working. The result of all this indolence was that when we came to take our final exams, the boys & girls who'd avoided the bar and stayed in the library working like hell all passed with flying colors; while the rest of us, who’d done nothing but play pool and have a good time, also passed with flying colors.
