Complete Marvel Chronology 1970 00-12



1970 - End of an Era



1970 can be marked by three significant events.



First was the departure of Jack Kirby from Marvel, after a decade of amazing creativity with Stan Lee. Fans debate the date the Silver Age of Comics ended, the departure of Kirby from Marvel is a candidate.



Next, 1970 saw the cancellation of X-Men, despite quality talent on the book in Roy Thomas and Neal Adams. The book would return as a reprint title but it would be in the mid-70s before new stories would be seen again.



Finally, 197 saw the creation of one of Marvel's most successful comics - Conan the Barbarian. Not an original Marvel character, the character and many of the stories were licensed from the estate of Robert E Howard, the creator of Conan, but the series would be memorable for the art of Barry Smith and the writing of Roy Thomas, who made the character a true comic book hero.



Xavier Returns



In issue 042 fans saw Charles Zavier die, and shortly after the X-Men split up and in each issue one character would be featured in a solo story. When the team get back together in issue 065 they return to the mansion to discover the Professor is still alive!



It is revealed that the 'Xavier' who died was in fact the Changling, and the real Xavier has ben working to combat the threat of the Z'Nox, an alien race intent on conquering the Earth.



X-Men Are Cancelled



The return of Xavier and the stunning art of Neal Adams were not enough to stop the sales of X-Men declining and with issue 066 the title was cancelled.



Issue 067 was published at a later date and the series continued but all the stories were reprints.



It would not be until Giant-Size X-Men 001 in 1975 that the world would see a new X-Men title, with the arrival of the all-new team coming to the rescue of the old team.



Following the one new story in the Giant-Size issue, the regular title saw a return to new stories with issue 094, after which the series, and the X-Men universe would see unprecedented growth over the years.



Fantastic Four Hit 100



July 1970 sees the centenary issue of Fantastic Four, the first title in the new Marvel Age to hit 100, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby.



The story features the Mad Thinker and Puppet Master using android doubles of the team's enemies to attack them.



The issue is also a celebration of one hundred consecutive issues by Lee and Kirby.



Split Titles Return



1970 sees the return of titles featuring two stories, with Amazing Adventures and Astonishing Tales.



Amazing Adventures featured the Inhumans, with art by Kirby, and the Black Widow, by Gary Friedrich and John Buscema.



Astonishing Tales saw the pairing of Ka-Zar, with the first story by Lee and Kirby, and Dr Doom, by Roy Thomas and Wally Wood.



The Dawning of the Hyborian Age



Robert E Howard created Conan in the thirties and his stories appeared in the pulp magazine Weird Tales.



Roy Thomas and Barry Smith were the creators of the comic book version in 1970, the team lasting on the title for 24 issues.



Following Smith's departure, Joh Buscema would become the regular artist on the title and would also contribute the majority of the art in the black and white magazine, Savage Sword of Conan.



The series is set around 10,000 years in the past, and references the ancient civilisations Atlantis and Valusia.



The popularity of the series would see other sword and sorcery characters such as Kull and Red Sonja in their own titles, as well as several other Howard creations, such as Bran Mak Morn.



The Death of George Stacy



Whilst Spider-Man was fighting Dr Octopus, George Stacy would attempt to save a small child from falling debris.



The child would be saved but George Stacy was crushed by the masonry.



Stacy calls Spider-Man 'Peter' revealing that he knew Parker's secret identity. As he dies, Stacy urges Peter to look after Gwen, but when she later blames Spider-Man he knows he can never tell her the truth of his secret identity.



Also Making Their Debut



Agatha Harkness, a sorceress, is chosen by Reed Richards to be governess for Franklin Richards (Fantastic Four 094)



Sunfire, a mutant from Hiroshima, attacks the Capitol building coming up against the X-Men, who he will briefly join later. (X-Men 064)



Orka, the Human Killer Whale, debuts in Sub-Mariner 032



Arkon, of the planet Polemachus comes up against the Avengers in issue 075.



Red Wolf, Marvel's first Native American hero, appears for the first time in Avengers 080.



Jim Wilson, created by Roy Thomas and Herb Trimpe, debuts in Incredible Hulk 131.



Llyra will meet the Sub-Mariner for the first time in issue 032.



Other Notable Events



Eddie March is trained by Tony Stark to replace him as Iron Man when Stark fears constant fighting in the armour would affect his heart. (Iron Man 021)



Nick Fury, believed dead, reappears using the alias of Scorpio. (Avengers 072)



Bruce Banner's wedding to Betty Ross is halted when the Leader hits Banner with a blast of radiation that turns him into the uncontrollable Hulk (Incredible Hulk 124)



Captain Marvel's title returns for just two issues in 1970, not to return again until 1972.



Jack Kirby's final full issues are Fantastic Four 101 and Thor 179. A last story by Lee and Kirby will appear in an edited version in Fantastic Four 108.
