[Costa's Arnhem Land Odyssey]



In this one-hour Australia Day special, garden guru Costa takes a
break from his regular format to explore a part of Australia he's
never seen before: Arnhem Land. Travelling to the remote
north-east of the Northern Territory, Costa meets with some of
Australia's first inhabitants (and first gardeners), the Yolngu
people. He's been invited to the small community of Yirrkala, and
in particular, the local school. The bilingual school has been
given a grant for a new garden, but funds ran out before it was
completed. Costa has offered his help and uses the school garden
as a kickoff point to learn more about the local environment, the
kinds of plants that grow in the climate and how the locals use
the land around them. Along the way, he's introduced to bush
tucker like native mangos, native peanuts and billygoat plums,
which have 50 times the vitamin C content of oranges. He also
tries his hand at hunting for fish and mud crabs and relaxes with
a traditional bush massage. It's a bit of a departure from the
regular Garden Odyssey but dovetails nicely with Costa's outlook
on sustainable and holistic gardening.
