Uma Thurman plays Sissy Hankshaw, a woman born with very large thumbs. After her parents (Grace Zabriskie and Ken Kesey) take her to a doctor (Buck Henry), who offers her parents no remedy for their daughter's condition, the film races ahead to the 1970s. Sissy is now a popular feminine hygiene spray model for a product called Yoni Yum, the product of a company owned by The Countess (John Hurt in drag). Sissy travels to the Rubber Rose beauty ranch, also owned by The Countess, to shoot a Yoni Yum commercial. At the ranch, she makes the acquaintance of the inscrutable Chink (Pat Morita) and Bonanza Jellybean (Rain Phoenix). But under the nose of The Countess, the cowgirls on the ranch are talking mutiny, with the women trying to liberate the Rubber Rose Ranch from the chains of patriarchal oppression.

Sissy Hankshaw è nata con due enormi pollici, grazie alla sua peculiarità passa gran parte della sua vita viaggiando in autostop da una costa all'altra degli Stati Uniti. Sissy si guadagna da vivere come testimonial della casa di cosmetici Yoni Yum, fondata dall'eccentrico travestito La Contessa. Ma l'anticonformista Sissy trova l'amore in Bonanza Jellybean, cowgirl che insieme ad altre ragazze gestisce il Rubber Rose Ranch, di proprietà de La Contessa. Così Sissy si unisce alle cowgirls insofferenti alle regole e all'autorità, condividendo con loro la battaglia contro il loro misogino capo e contro il governo che pretende la restituzione di alcuni fenicotteri, fermatisi nel laghetto del Ranch durante la loro migrazione.



.: Recensione :.

Fossimo stati nel 1993 a consigliarvi la visione di Cowgirl ci avrebbero preso per pazzi. La maggior parte lo farebbe anche oggi, ma ormai il quarto film di Gus Van Sant ha una sua piccola schiera di aficionados. Ma quando il film fu visto a Venezia, dov’era in concorso, le critiche furono unanimi e spietate. Troppo grottesco, troppa controcultura, troppa follia, troppo. E Van Sant fu costretto a rimontare il suo lavoro.

In più dovette aggiungere una scritta che ancora oggi rende tristi ogni volta che la si rilegge: dedicato a River Phoenix, morto nel frattempo quell’anno. Se pensiamo poi che Rain Phoenix, sorella di River (e di Joaquin, spronato proprio da Van Sant a ritornare a recitare dopo il trauma subito), è co-protagonista di questo film, Cowgirl assume ancora di più l’aura di film sfortunato e maledetto soprattutto per chi ci ha lavorato.

Della trama si potrebbe non dire nulla, tanto è inutile: basti sapere che è la storia di una ragazza dai pollicioni abnormi, autostoppista e ogni tanto modella, tra amori, “filosofia” e ribellione, interpretata da una splendida e angelica Uma Thurman. Oggi le tematiche di Cowgirl sono attuali come ieri (inno alla libertà contro ogni padrone, inno alla libertà sessuale), ma sono il suo essere colorato e pop, come spesso nei film di Van Sant, e la sua forma anarchica e discontinua a renderlo interessante. Un “ufo”, piaccia o meno.
