Nel dicembre del 1966, dopo il singolo "Wrapping Paper", fu pubblicato il primo lavoro discografico sulla lunga distanza, Fresh Cream. Benché fosse costituito per gran parte da cover blues, come "Four Until Late" del grande bluesman Robert Johnson, l'album rappresentò una vera e propria innovazione nel panorama musicale, grazie all'utilizzo del wah-wah negli assoli e nei riff di Clapton, e per le acrobazie percussionistiche di Baker; senza voler togliere nulla, poi, alla voce calda e suadente di Bruce, autore di alcuni brani inediti, scritti in collaborazione con il poeta Pete Brown. Il rock di "I Feel Free", costituito da cori vocali, funge da elemento di continuità tra il passato e il proseguimento della loro carriera; la formula si ripete anche in "N.S.U." (acronimo di "non-specific urethritis", ovvero il nome di una malattia venerea), dove si cominciano a intravedere tracce di psichedelia, soprattutto nell'arpeggio iniziale della chitarra.
