Peter Crossley-Holland began his professional career, not as a musician, but as a doctor. He loved music, however, and composed it without instruction, until he won a scholarship in 1938 for a couple of his works, and studied at the Royal College of Music under John Ireland. Over the years he achieved a striking reputation as an ethnomusicologist, and traveled widely in both Europe and Asia, writing on various non-European musical systems, as well as several books on Tibetan Buddhism. His son, Kevin Crossley-Holland, is perhaps more famous, due to his celebrated books for children; our composer's last work before his death was a setting of one of his son's poems, The Philosopher Bird, to music.

His Symphony had a long gestation, despite being composed after Crossley-Holland's ostensible retirement. He was still very active in the ethnomusicological field, and though begun in 1988, the work wasn't completed until 1994. It was criticized on the one hand by serialists as stilted, and by strict traditionalists as lacking development. Taken on its own terms, it is an original work of imaginative ideas that unfold naturally, without concern for musical for musical fashions of the day.
