Layer Beats
Drum loops from my archive were loaded into Kontakt from C0 to C8 and switched to Beatmachine playback.
The beats were selected per tempo (here 95, 120, 130 and 170 bpms are used) so as to not be from that
tempo originally (e.g. using 100bpm beats for 170bpm and 140bpm for 95bpm). These were then layered up
by arranged by a semi-random assignment of MIDI inputs. The output from Kontakt was passed through a
set of pedals and outboard gear (see below) before reentering the digital realm via the Orion 32 A/D
converters. They were only normalised after that.

Mixer Feedback
A Mackie 1202VLZ 'micro' mixer was given for me to repair, and once done I then abused it by feeding the
two Aux sends back to two channels. Judicious tweaking of the gain and EQ controls gave some vague
order to the squeaking and squawking that resulted. This was fed out through the pedals and outboard chain
used for Layer Beats. The stream (many minutes of twiddling) was then edited/mined for nuggets which form
the 35 samples included here. Most have been chopped out as loops - it's obvious which ones aren't loops.

Tone Beats
The Kontakt kits of beats used for Layer Beats were put to use for a more musical starting point: beats with a
musical tone to play off. By mushing the layered beats through heavy compression, modulation and delay,
then feeding this to the Arturia Moog Modular's external inputs to mix it with the oscillators, all of which is
then squeezed through the filters and often my favourite, the Bode Shifter. This was the further processed
with compression, delay, spring reverb and modulation to taste.
