A former British water-skiing champion at the age of 15, Gillespie embarked on a singing career during the folk boom of the mid-60s. She befriended Donovan, who played guitar on her 1965 single, ‘Donna Donna’, but was later drawn towards acting with roles in the 1968 Hammer film The Lost Continent and the stage musical Liz. Dick Rowe, the Decca Records A&R man who turned down the Beatles, allegedly said to her, ‘It doesn’t really matter if you can sing or not, you’ve got a great pair of tits’. However, Gillespie subsequently proved her worth throughout her incredibly varied career. Her 1968 release Box Of Surprises, presaged spells in Catch My Soul and Jesus Christ Superstar, and she was then signed to Tony DeFries’ Mainman management stable, which also included David Bowie. She was saddled with an overtly sexual image, dressed as a scantily clad, basque-wearing vamp on 1973’s Weren’t Born A Man, and as a male sailor scanning soft-core pornography (of herself) on Ain’t Gonna Play No Second Fiddle, but this approach detracted from any musical content the sets had to offer. In later years Gillespie has continued to perform throughout Europe and the USA with the Dana Gillespie Blues Band, whose line-up has included Dave Rowberry (piano, ex-Animals), Ed Deane (guitar), Charlie Hart and Adrian Stout (bass), Chris Hunt (drums) and Mike Paice (saxophone, harmonica). She has also released Bhaja based music under the pseudonym Third Man, recording in Sanskrit. By the end of the 90s Gillespie had won numerous blues magazine polls as best female vocalist, making a nonsense of Dick Rowe’s original judgement. --------------------------------------- Tracklist --------------------------------------- 01.
