Long ago, when the Celtic peoples marked the passing of time by the turning of the year and not by a brightly-coloured calendar upon the wall -- when the seasons meant more than the changing of one's wardrobe -- the wise or the wealthy might possess a Book of Days to illuminate the march of time with tales and the traditions of elder times. Each important celebration had its own special stores to mark its importance; each festival was outlined with rites and rituals, solemn or joyful. These stories were heard with delight, not only by the young, but by their parents as well, for they marked the boundaries of time, and gave extra meaning to the procession of the changing year.
