In Day of Defeat: Source focuses on team tactics. Playing for any of six different classes players interact with each other using a communication system internal to coordinate attacks and defense. Being armed with unique weapons, each class acts out a role for the success team. The aim of the game is to capture all control points on the map, destroying all enemy targets or a combination of the problem. Once connected to the game, the participant chooses between two warring factions - the Wehrmacht and allies - and the six classes.

Each team has a fixed area of ​​appearance, in which players respawn after death.
