The recording that made the Deb etudes popular (and in fact his late piano work in general). A righty famous account, Uchida's is still one of the two or three I keep coming back to, along with, say, the Jacobs and Gieseking. Pollini is nervous, even reluctant, Tirimo too fussy; Jones is just boring. Woodward and Boffard aren't bad.

Uchida's isn't a 'definitive' account (I've never liked the concept of an ultimate artistic index for a given work), namely because, like the Preludes and Images, it's endlessly fascinating to see what else can be put into this sublime music. But it's a bloody good performance, and one of my favourite discs ever.
