Jean Simmons and Mona Washbourne star in this short drama directed by Stephen Frears. The supporting cast include Pat Heywood, Bryan Forbes (in a rare acting role) and June Ritchie. The story/script (by Judy Allen) involves a middle-aged woman (Simmons), adrift after her husband's death, who comes to visit an elderly aunt (Washbourne). When she arrives, she's appalled to see her aunt wasting away from neglect due to the housekeeper-cum-caretaker's misguided beliefs and the indifference of the aunt's son and daughter-in-law. Not one to suffer fools gladly, the niece takes charge -- in an uphill battle of wills against the aunt's official guardians, who wish she would just leave well enough alone -- and coaxes her aunt back into a state of vitality. The story is a bit predictable, and perhaps overly sentimental, but the acting - from both leading ladies - is superb. And fans of Mona Washbourne (who were once legion) will not want to miss seeing this, her last filmed performance. From a very old TV-to-VHS rip (mid-1980s), with linear mono sound, the quality of the source material can be described as "fair-to-middling," while the encoding is probably in the "better-than-average" realm. (The screen caps above show the print at its best, as they're close-ups; busier frames are not as sharp.)
