Deva Premal (born in 1970 in Germany), is a musician known for her New Age meditative music, which puts ancient Hindu mantras into atmospheric, contemporary settings.



Deva has toured since 1991, along with her life partner, Miten, offering concerts and chant workshops worldwide. Their record company, [Prabhu Music][1], reports sales of over 600,000 albums.



Best-known for her top-selling chant CDs, Deva Premal is a classically trained musician and gifted singer. She grew up singing mantras in a German home permeated with Eastern spirituality. Her albums, The Essence, Love Is Space, Embrace and Dakshina have topped the New Age charts and popularity polls in yoga studios and healing centers throughout the world. Her latest album, The Moola Mantra, features a 50 minute extended presentation of a mantra received while on a meditation retreat with Miten at the Oneness University in Chennai, India. Deva primal is a unique mixture of her own interpretation or manufacture of mantras and using the Book "Healing Mantras" ISBN: 1564557359 for inspiration. An added plus is the repetitiveness of her songs instead of changing the mode every five minutes or so. Thos album is not necessarily a classic but a hybrid of classic and contemporary to close the gap between the two worlds. There are better representations in both worlds but that does not distract form this great contribution.

Naturally each listener will select there own favorites, depending on circumstances and mood. Most of the time mine is "shree ram jai ram jai jai ram om."

Reading the insert will add to the appreciation of these songs. It tells of her background and the purpose of each song or chant.





Heartfelt Healing Music, January 12, 2004 By Yoga Dad



I first became aware of Deva Premal's "Embrace" in my Yoga class and finally went out and recently got a copy of this CD.



This music combines Mantras with eclectic music which draws from many styles. Deva Premal has one of the most incredibly beautiful and sincere voices I've ever heard and I find that this music truly reaches inside my heart and elevates my spirits.



It's wonderful music not only to practice yoga with but to hear at any time.



I can't recommend this CD highly enough, it is a truly wonderful gift of music and I am looking forward to getting more of her CDs.

I found this disc disappointing compared to Deva's brilliant first CD entitled The Essence - which is a must have. What seems strange to me is that she is on the inside cover touching Buddha's chest, while the first track sounds like make-out music. Hmmmm.... For what it's worth, an Indian Brahmin confirmed that some of the mantras are concoctions, too, which does not really set a good precedent. People copy Deva's chanting in their kirtans and in this respect her work is influential. Although being innovative can be commendable, spiritual traditional chants are, in my opinion, off limits for whimsical changes. I wish she would get her mantras from reliable sources in the future.
