Two part dramatisation of the Leon Garfield novel. George Trent is the oldest of the 7 Trent children, who with their father form a troupe of travelling actors in 18th century England. Every year, they travel to Rye where they meet a mysterious man, who gives Trent Senior money. On this occasion however, George receives the news that he is actually the son of a nobleman and must now return to his natural father.

He moves to his new home, but is unhappy. Then, to make matters worse, he discovers that somebody is trying to kill him.....
