Excerpt:

In November 2007, columnist robert shrimsley wrote about the inclusion of disability in hate crime legislation in the (british) Financial Times. He called it ‘a mockery of the law and the disabled’. shrimsley began by asking:

Don’t you just hate the disabled? you don’t? that’s odd; i was under the impression a lot of people must do. What other conclusion can one draw from the government’s decision to create a new criminal offence of incitement to hate crime against the disabled? (shrimsley, 2007).

Shrimsley’s column is fairly representative of one school of thought which suggests that antidisability hate is quite rare. He further laughingly suggests that one ‘criminal mastermind’ must be orchestrating this hate. but one need not be so sarcastic to assume that antidisability hate is a marginal feature of contemporary social life. even tom shakespeare, a well-known british disability studies scholar, is quoted in one report as saying that there was a danger of overstating the degree of disability hatred. ‘i think there’s a danger of exaggerating’, he is quoted as saying on the bbC website. ‘there’s been a small number of truly appalling situations, but in the most part people don’t hate disabled people’ (adams-spink, 2008).
