Show Summary:

Martin Clunes stars in Doc Martin, a comedy drama, as a doctor whose truculence and tactless manner causes mayhem in a small Cornish community.

Martin plays surgeon Martin Ellingham, whose glittering career comes crashing down around him when he develops a phobia which prevents him conducting operations. He makes a life changing decision to retrain as a GP, and applies for a vacant post in the sleepy Cornish hamlet of Portwenn, where he spent childhood holidays. If the patients are expecting tea and sympathy from their curmudgeonly GP they are going to be disappointed. Despite his surgical brilliance, he has no personal skills, and his understanding of humans is practically non existent.

Martin is joined by a prestigious cast which includes Stephanie Cole as his Aunt Joan, who provides him with emotional support in the face of the disquiet among the villagers. Caroline Catz plays pretty primary school teacher Louisa Glasson. Doc Martin is attracted to her, but he is hopeless at personal relationships.

Episode one

The children of Portwenn primary school are being read a fairy story by headmistress Louisa Glasson as the grumpiest doctor in the West Country marches through the fishing village. Suddenly Louisa feels faint and passes out in front of her class.

Although she insists she is okay, Dr Ellingham is concerned she may be anaemic and asks her to see him at his surgery.

Later on at the surgery she feels uncomfortable talking to him because of their shared personal history and requests a transfer to another doctor.

Louisa tries to talk about their relationship but, as usual, Dr Ellingham fails to pick up on the personal signals. He is as blunt as ever and has no words of reassurance. Any chance of romance seems doomed.

Meanwhile school dinner-lady Alison Lane is struggling to control her adolescent daughter Delph who is constantly in trouble.

Alison is convinced Delph has a medical condition. But the doctor disagrees and is quick to dismiss her without treatment because, in his opinion, Delph is a delinquent in need of good parenting.

But he re-thinks his diagnosis when he begins to suspect the cause of Delph’s hyperactivity might be the diet pills Alison has been buying from the pharmacist Mrs Tishell.

Delph is nearly killed when she jumps from a moving trailer and crashes through the glass door of village shop. As Martin treats Delph, he’s overcome by his phobia of blood. Help is surprisingly at hand from his receptionist Pauline Lamb.

Pauline is becoming increasingly frustrated by the limitations of her job and is continually overstepping the mark by interfering with the doctor’s duties.

Episode two

Bert Large could be the man to put Portwenn on the culinary map. Dissatisfied with his lot in life he abandons his plumbing business to open his own restaurant.

But as with Bert’s previous enterprises, the new venture is fraught with problems.

The opening of Large’s restaurant is far from a success, when Dr Martin Ellingham, who has a phobia about blood, finds a spot of it on his plate. To the embarrassment of Louisa Martin complains to Bert in front of the other customers, threatening a visit from Environmental Health unless he can clean up his act.

To make matters worse for Bert, the following day the surgery is inundated with patients with symptoms of food poisoning, and all claiming to have eaten at his restaurant.

Louisa Glasson has also fallen victim to food poisoning after dining at the restaurant with Martin. The doctor is embarrassed to have to treat her in her bedroom and escapes as quickly as he can having demanded a sample.

Episode three

A family of city slickers seeking a new life by the sea look set to disrupt the tranquillity of Portwenn.

Anthony and Terri Oakwood and their son Sam move in next door to Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz) having bought their house from recently widowed Mrs Averill.

The family is unconventional in their lifestyle and their arrival upsets Louisa, Martin (Martin Clunes) and the other locals.

They manage to gatecrash an intimate dinner Louisa has prepared for her and Martin. With their romantic plans ruined, the disgruntled doctor makes a hasty exit leaving Louisa to deal with the neighbours from hell.

During the move from her old house, Mrs Averill has lost her cat.

She’s lonely without her pet. Desperate for company she goes to see the doctor suffering from a rash. She thinks she is suffering from eczema. True to form Doc Martin sends her away with ointment and little sympathy.

Episode four

Portwenn is becoming a hotbed of passion. Louisa is furious to discover she has a rival for Dr Martin Ellingham’s affections: glamorous divorcee and hotel owner, Carrie Wilson (Louise Delamere). Can Louisa contain her jealousy and claim Martin as her man before Carrie’s flirty tactics take effect? Or will he remain immune to them in typical fashion?

Meanwhile, aunt Joan (Stephanie Cole) unexpectedly finds she has an admirer. Edward Melville (Justin Salinger) is a local painter who is 30 years younger than her.

But after inviting Edward to do some decorating at her house, their relationship progresses quickly – shocking Doc Martin when he accidentally catches them in a compromising position.

It seems the doctor can’t help running into Carrie Wilson – literally. Having met Carrie for the first time at his surgery earlier that day Martin, troubled by the image of aunt Joan and her new man still fresh in his mind, almost runs her over with his car.

Episode five

It has taken three series but Doc Martin and Louisa are finally going on a date. They have found the perfect spot for romance, the stunning grounds of a country house while classical music plays.

It all looks so promising, they even hold hands in front of everybody. Surely Louisa must win her man?

So Louisa (Caroline Catz) seizes the opportunity of a quiet moment away from the crowds for a romantic kiss. But the clumsy doctor manages to ruin the moment with an inappropriate remark.

It is the final straw for her. She has tried so hard to win the doctor, but he doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body. She ends their affair, leaving Martin (Martin Clunes) shell shocked.

The break-up hits Martin harder than he anticipated. He can’t concentrate on anything. But there’s one more chance to redeem himself when he gets an urgent call for help from Louisa to treat her friend Holly (Lucy Robinson).

Holly has injured her back when out walking in Portwenn and has been forced to recuperate at Louisa’s house. Defying doctor’s orders she gets out of bed, and collapses, cutting herself badly on a bottle. Will his healing abilities fix their rift as well?

Episode six

Portwenn is buzzing with the news of the engagement of Dr Ellingham and headmistress Louisa Glasson.

While Louisa begins to make arrangements for the wedding it’s business as usual for the doctor. He’s puzzled about why Beth Sawle’s knee replacement wound is not responding to the treatment he's prescribed, and has become infected. He decides to visit her in the remote cottage she shares with her strange sister, Janet.

The doctor discovers Janet has been refusing to allow Beth to take the antibiotics the doctor has given her. She insists a potion she has made from mushrooms growing in the cellar of their house is a much more effective and natural method of treatment.

But on an inspection of the cellar the doctor discovers the mushrooms are also the cause of an outbreak of disease in the village. Bert Large, Postman Dave and restaurant chef, Mick Mabley, are among the victims.

Bert Large’s ill health is not his only problem. His restaurant is in financial trouble. To cut costs he cancels the vegetable order with Aunt Joan, to her fury. Son Al decides it is time to take action to save the business.

Episode seven

It’s business as usual for Dr Martin Ellingham even though it's his wedding day. He opens the surgery as normal to a stream of patients, including one of the bridesmaids.

Louisa’s best friend Isobel, who is heavily pregnant, is hit in the eye with a party popper as Roger Fenn, who is giving Louisa away, raises a toast to the bride to be. The doctor prescribes eye-drops, and a patch to cover the injury.

An eye patch with a bridesmaid’s dress is not a good look.

Then Martin offends the local vicar who is due to conduct the wedding ceremony. He suggests he has a drink problem. But when he goes to the church to try to placate him, Martin catches him red handed with a bottle of whisky.

The vicar stumbles as Martin tries to take the bottle away from him, falls over, and fractures his pelvis. As the ambulance takes him to hospital, Martin must find a replacement with just three hours to go
