After a picturesque escapade in 19th-century Provence, it's back to the present day and an ordinary-looking house in Colchester. But poor Amy and an arthritic-sounding Tardis have been flung into deep space, due no doubt to something timey-wimey. While he works out what's happened, our bow-tied boffin (Matt Smith) must masquerade as a human being and share a flat with a lovelorn couch potato called Craig (James Corden - a superb and surprising foil to the funnyman in Smith). Of course, the Doctor is appalling at blending in, though a stint in Craig's local team gives former footballer Smith the chance to show off his deft dribbling skills. Goal! There's a creepy man-at-the-top-of-the-stairs subplot, but Gareth Roberts's sweet romcom is rooted firmly in the everyday. Doctor Who can be many things: The Lodger shows just how deliciously funny it can be.
