Donovan (born Donovan Philips Leitch, 10 May 1946) is a Scottish singer, songwriter and guitarist. Initially labelled as an imitator of Bob Dylan, Donovan quickly developed an eclectic and

distinctive style that blended folk, jazz, pop, psychedelia, and world music (notably calypso). He has variously lived in Scotland, London, California and Ireland, and currently lives with

his family in County Cork in Ireland.[1]

Emerging from the British folk scene, Donovan shot to fame in the United Kingdom in early 1965 with a series of live performances on the pop TV series, Ready Steady Go!. Initially signing

with the British label Pye Records in 1965, he recorded a handful of singles and two albums in the folk music vein, but after signing a new contract with the US label Epic Records his

popularity rapidly spread to the US and other countries. After extricating himself from his original management contract, he began a long and successful collaboration with Mickie Most, one

of the leading British independent record producers of the era, scoring a string of hits in the UK, the US, Australia and other countries. His successful records in the 1960s included the

UK hits "Catch the Wind" and "Colours" in 1965, while "Sunshine Superman" topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart the following year, and reached #2 in Britain. Donovan was the first artist

to be signed to CBS/Epic Records by then-new Administrative Vice President Clive Davis, who later became head of the CBS Record empire.

Scozzese di Maryhill, sobborgo di Glasgow, si fece conoscere presso il grande pubblico con Catch the Wind, partecipando a numerosi programmi televisivi come Ready, Steady, Go!. Il brano

ebbe un buon successo anche oltreoceano e, in estate Donovan era in America per un tour promozionale con alcune apparizioni televisive; si esibì inoltre al Newport Folk Festival del 1965,

dove duettò con Joan Baez nella sua Colours.

Durante questo primo periodo le sue canzoni erano in puro stile folk, eseguite con sola voce e chitarra acustica; questo portò la maggior parte della stampa a paragonarlo ad una copia di

Bob Dylan (Donovan l'aveva incontrato a Londra in maggio durante il tour inglese di quest'ultimo). Il film documentario Dont Look Back, che ritrae Dylan proprio durante questo Tour, mostra

quanto tra i due non corresse affatto buon sangue: il giovane Dylan detestava di avere un rivale sulla scena inglese e quando i due finalmente si incontrano, in una stanza d'albergo

trasformata in bivacco alcolico, ne nasce una sfida musicale che passerà alla storia. Il timido ed educato Donovan esegue "To sing for you" la cui dolce melodia ricorda molto lo stile delle

prime canzoni del rivale. Dylan, trincerato dietro i suoi occhiali da sole, lo ascolta muovendo la gamba fuori tempo. Poi, con fare sornione e di sfida, gli chiede la chitarra ed esegue una

splendida versione di "It's all over now, baby blue". A sentirla, Donovan rimane di sasso. Ma checché i giornalisti accostassero Donovan a Dylan in paragoni talvolta eccessivi, il tempo

dimostrerà le loro differenze. Già dal 1966, con l'assistenza del produttore Mickie Most (The Who, Cat Stevens ed altri), Donovan incide Sunshine Superman con sonorità psichedeliche che si

discostano completamente dallo stile acustico che aveva caratterizzato l'artista agli esordi. A queste registrazioni parteciperanno musicisti come Jimmy Page e John Paul Jones (futuri

membri dei Led Zeppelin) e Shawn Phillips.Il 3 settembre dello stesso anno la rivista Cash Box premia Sunshine Superman di Donovan come miglior singolo
