De vijftiende eeuw. De jonge prins Vlad Tepes (Luke Evans) leidt samen met zijn gezin een gelukkig leven en heerst over een klein koninkrijk. Wanneer de door hem gevestigde vrede wordt bedreigd door een moordlustige sultan reist Vlad af naar de Broken Tooth berg, waar hij een oeroude tovenaar tegenkomt. De twee sluiten een deal, de prins krijgt de kracht en snelheid om zijn vijanden te vernietigen, maar zal daardoor een onstilbare dorst naar menselijk bloed hebben. Hij wordt daarbij de eerste vampier die de wereld ooit gezien heeft: Dracula.
