Hong Kong box office, earning two and a half times the amount of Chans previous film, Snake in the Eagles Shadow, which was also considered a successful film.It is an early example of the comedic kung fu style for which Jackie Chan became famous. The film popularised the Zui Quan (drunken fist) fighting movement.
Sequels and spinoffs
Drunken Master - A semi-sequel to the 1978 film Snake in the Eagles Shadow, which featured the same cast and director.
Drunken Master II - This did star Jackie Chan, and is often considered a sequel. The US release of the film in 2000 was entitled The Legend Of Drunken Master.
In 1979 Yuen Siu-tien reprised the role of Beggar So in the film Dance of the Drunk Mantis, which is entitled Drunken Master Part 2 (not to be confused with Drunken Master II noted above)
in some releases. The film, which was again directed by his son, Yuen Woo-ping, does not feature Jackie Chan, focusing instead on the drunken beggar character rather than on Wong Fei-hung.
It is therefore generally considered to be a spinoff rather than a true sequel.Yuen played this same role again in the films Story of Drunken Master and World of the Drunken Master.
In 2010 Yuen Woo-ping returned to directing with True Legend which could be called prequel to Drunken Master as it explains why Beggar Su (played by Vincent Zhao) turns to drinking.
Imitators
As with many successful Hong Kong action films, several films were released in the wake of Drunken Master(and its sequel)that could be considered to trade on the fame of the original films.
These had less in common with the original films than the spinoffs starring Yuen Siu Tien. It should be noted that not all films that feature the Zui Quan "Drunken Fist" style (or variations on it) can be considered as imitators of the Drunken Master films. Films such as Drunken Monkey(2002) may feature a drunken style of kung fu, and in the case of The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), the same principal star, but they have a fundamentally different plot and sufficiently different title to separate them from Drunken Master.

In 1978, with his career going nowhere, Jackie Chan was loaned to Seasonal films for a two picture deal. The company wanted Fu Sheng, but due to other commitments, he was unavailable. The company begged the producer (Ng See Yuen) not to hire Jackie, stating that no film of his had ever been a hit, but Ng See Yuen liked what he saw, and a legend was born…
An unofficial prequel to Drunken Master, Snake in the Eagle's Shadow follows the trials and travails of Chien Fu, a servant and "walking dummy" in a town's kung fu school. He is regularly bullied and made to act as a punching bag for students and instructors that want to show their skills to prospective clients. He befriends an old beggar named Pai Chang Tien (Simon Yuen) who is the last known master of the Snake Fist style. He is being hunted by Eagle Claw master Shang Kuan Yin (Hwang Jang Lee), who is determined to wipe out all Snake Fist practitioners. Seeing that Chien is an able student, Pai decides to pass the knowledge onto him, thus continuing the style's tradition. Before long though, Shang catches up to both of them, and they must battle him and his students to protect the Snake Fist style from extinction.

In 1979, a film entitled Snake in the Eagle's Shadow II aka Snaky Knight Fight Against Mantis was released. It was directed by Chang Hsin-yi and starred Wang Tao. However, the film was not a true sequel to Snake in the Eagle's Shadow, rather it was an attempt by the studio to capitalise on the success of the original film. Footage including a montage and a fight scene from Snake in the Eagle's Shadow were spliced into the film. Chan's image was also used on the cover of some versions.

The plot centers on a young and mischievous Wong Fei-hung (sometimes dubbed as "Freddie Wong"). Wong runs into a series of troubles. Firstly, he teaches an overbearing assistant
martial arts teacher a lesson. Next, he makes advances on a woman to impress his friends, and is soundly thrashed by her older female guardian as a result; his shame is compounded when these two are later revealed to be his visiting aunt and cousin, whom he had not met before. Lastly, he beats up a hooligan who is the son of an influential man in town. His father decides to punish him for his behavior by making him train harder in martial arts.

Not to be confused with Dance of the Drunk Mantis aka Drunken Master Part 2. Drunken Master II The film was released in North America as The Legend of Drunken Master in 2000. The film is a follow-up to Chans 1978 film Drunken Master, directed by Yuen Woo-ping, but not a direct storyline sequel. Another film, Drunken Master 3 (1994, directed by Lau Kar-Leung) is not considered a sequel. The story concerns the misadventures of Wong Fei Hung as he accidentally becomes involved with the affairs of the British consul, who are smuggling ancient Chinese artifacts out of the country. Fei Hung battles the henchmen of the consul using the Zui Quan (Drunken Boxing) style of martial arts. Fei Hung finds that he becomes a more powerful fighter when he consumes alcohol, although after consuming too much alcohol, he becomes very sluggish, drunk, and incapable of fighting.

Dance of the Drunk Mantis is a 1979 Hong Kong kung fu comedy film directed by Yuen Siu Tien’s real life son Yuen Woo-ping, starring Yuen Siu Tien, Hwang Jang Lee, Linda Lin, Yuen Shun Yee, Charlie Shek and Yuen Kwai. This was Yuen Siu Tien's final film before his death on January 8, 1979, from a heart attack.
Famed choreographer and martial arts director Yuen Woo-ping follows up on his wildly successful Jackie Chan vehicle with this kung-fu comedy. Sam the Seed (Simon Yuen Siu-tien) is one of the finest drunken boxers around, in spite of his shambled appearance. He returns home after a prolonged jaunt about the country only to discover that his teenaged son is an incorrigible klutz, seemingly unable to master the simplest of kung-fu moves. Though Sam's wife begs him to teach the lad some of the finer points of fighting, he instead has his son practice a series of grueling and painful calisthenics.

Misleading title. Beggar So (the titular Drunken Master) is the central character, but the story doesn't say much about him !
Beggar So is trying to train brother and sister team Chung and Gam Fa, with mixed results! But an enemy from Beggar So's past, Grasshopper Bill Chan and his brother Cougar start causing trouble and throw Beggar So out of his house. Grasshopper Bill helps Kai to be pledged in marriage to Gam Fa against her wishes, but secretly he wants her all to himself, which leads to a final battle.
