============================ Dungeon Keeper Direct3D (TM) ============================ ============================ 9th March 1998 Updated 13th October 1998 Dungeon Keeper Gold Version 10.1 ** Please select Word Wrap from the Edit menu ** ** if you are viewing this file in Notepad ** This version of Dungeon Keeper supports 3D accelerator cards using the Direct3D standard. To play Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, you will need a supported graphics card (see list below), and the latest DirectX5 drivers already installed. If you do not have this you should play the standard version of Dungeon Keeper. ========================= 1.0 Minimum Specification ========================= Intel Pentium 150Mhz (200MHz recommended) Windows(R) 95. 16Mb Ram (32Mb recommended) 80Mb Free Hard disk space for installation (including Deeper Dungeons) 4x CD-ROM drive. 100% Compatible Microsoft(R) mouse & Driver. DirectX version 5 or later installed. DirectX supported 16-bit sound card & video cards. Graphics Accelerator Card with the following features: - Direct3D support through DirectX5 - 4Mb of Video RAM - texture mapping, with alpha surfaces (filtering recommended) - Z-buffering - see list of supported cards below (1.1 : Cards Supported) - note that some common cards may not work immediately or at all. Please refer to the TroubleShooting section below. ** Note that if your graphics card does not work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, you can still run the standard version of Dungeon Keeper ** 1.1 Cards Supported ------------------- ** Note that if your graphics card does not work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, you can still run the standard version of Dungeon Keeper ** Even if you have a supported 3D accelerator card, you could still experience problems. Check that you have the very latest drivers for your card. See section 4.2 of this readme file for more information Cards supported include those below : Matrox Mystique (TM) Matrox Millenium 2 3Dfx-Voodoo Chipset Based Cards Diamond Monster3D Orchid Righteous3D Canopus Pure3D 3Dfx Voodoo Rush(TM) Chipset Based Cards Intergraph Intense 3D(TM) Jazz Adrenaline Rush 3-D(TM) nVidia-RIVA128(TM) Chipset Based Cards Diamond Viper330(TM) STB Velocity128 ASUS 3DexPlorer(TM) 3000 ATI Rage Pro Chipset Based Cards ATI All-in-Wonder Pro ATI XPERT@Play ATI XPERT@Work Videologic PowerVR(TM)-PCX2 Chipset Matrox-M3D Videologic Apocalypse 3Dx Videologic Apocalypse 5D 3Dlabs-Permedia(TM)-2 Chipset Creative Graphics Blaster(TM) Exxtreme Rendition(TM) 2100 Chipset Diamond Stealth(TM) II S220 Intel 740 Chipset 1.2 Cards Not Supported ----------------------- ** Note that if your graphics card does not work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, you can still run the standard version of Dungeon Keeper. ** Many graphics cards offer only 2D features. These will not work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, since it requires 3D features. The following graphics cards offer 3D acceleration, but may not work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D, because they lack some of the required features or memory. Some cards will state 4Mb of video ram, but may not be able to use all the memory for sprites if they use a nonlinear allocation scheme. Cards not supported include those below : Matrox Millenium 1 S3 Virge(R) Chipset ATI Rage 1 Chipset ATI Rage 2 Chipset 3DLabs Permedia(TM)-1 Chipset Cirrus Laguna Chipset ================ 2.0 Installation ================ First install Dungeon Keeper Gold. The instructions for this installation are in the Reference Card. Now double click on "My Computer" on the Windows desktop. Right click on the CD-ROM drive (usually D:) and leftclick on "Open". Double click on the file "Install Keeper Direct3D". This will launch the install program. Follow instructions on screen to complete the installation. NOTE: Dungeon Keeper and Deeper Dungeons require only DirectX version 3. For the Direct3D version, the later DirectX version 5.0 or later is required. The Dungeon Keeper Gold install program will offer you the chance to install DirectX version 5.2 if you need it. ==================== 3.0 Running the game ==================== Click on the Start button from the Windows 95 taskbar and select Programs->Bullfrog->Dungeon Keeper Direct3D->Dungeon Keeper Direct 3D or Programs->Bullfrog->Dungeon Keeper Direct3D->The Deeper Dungeons Direct 3D ==================== 4.0 Trouble-Shooting ==================== Direct3D hardware acceleration is a very complex technology. We have tested Dungeon Keeper Direct3D on many different graphics cards, and have proven it to work on the cards listed in section 1.1 above, when using the latest drivers. It is most important that you use the latest available DirectX/Direct3D drivers for your card. Even the drivers that come with your card may be out of date and you should consider upgrading them. The newest drivers can usually be found on your card manufacturer's website. 4.1 Troubleshooting Checklist ----------------------------- If the game runs very slowly... The speed and visual quality with which Dungeon Keeper Direct3D runs is very dependent on both your 3D accelerator card and your processor speed. Even with a very fast PC, a slow graphics card (or one with little memory) could make the Direct3D version of the game run slowly. You should compare the standard version of Dungeon Keeper to the Direct3D version - you may decide the standard version works better on your machine. If you get visual errors... 1. Check you have a supported card from the list above [1.1 Cards Supported]. If not, you can only run the standard version of Dungeon Keeper. If your card is supported, your card manufacturer can provide you with recent, compatible drivers. Contact them or see their website. If you have a recent 3D graphics card which is not in either the "supported" or the "not supported" then you should consult your card manufacturer to find if it is compatible. 2. Check you have installed DirectX5. If not, reinstall Dungeon Keeper Gold following the instructions in section 2.0, and say "Yes" to the option to install DirectX5. 3. Check you have the very latest drivers installed. If in doubt, check with your card supplier or look on their website. Even if you have bought your card recently, it may have been supplied with old or buggy drivers. Some of the popular cards included on the supported list ship with drivers which do not work with Dungeon Keeper Direct3D. 4. Check you have: installed your 3D card and its drivers first, then installed Dungeon Keeper Gold, then installed the Direct3D version. If in doubt, reinstall Dungeon Keeper Direct3D after you install new sets drivers for your graphics card. 5. The Dungeon Keeper Gold CD must be in the CDROM drive while you play 6. You must not disable hardware acceleration in the DirectX control panel, or on the Display Properties menus 7. If you have multiple graphics cards in your machine, Dungeon Keeper Gold attempts to choose the best one. If the wrong one is selected, try double clicking each of the setup files below : SelectPrimaryDirect3DDevice.reg OR SelectSecondaryDirect3DDevice.reg OR SelectDefaultDirect3DDevice.reg to return to default behaviour. This will force the correct card selection, then run the game. These files can be found in the same directory you selected to install the KeepD3D.EXE executable, which is by default "C:Program FilesBullfrogKeeper". 4.2 Known problems with graphics cards -------------------------------------- ** If you have difficulty obtaining or installing the latest drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 1. New Drivers: for your convenience, we have included some of the latest drivers (at the time of shipping) for common 3D graphics cards on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CD, as supplied by the card or chipset manufacturer. If you require technical assistance with installing new drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier. The drivers are on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CD, in the directory "DK-D3DDrivers". Look for a directory here which is the name of your graphics card or the chipset which it is based on. The installation instructions vary according to the supplier and can be quite complex to follow - note that Bullfrog/Electronic Arts have no control over this. Hints on installing new drivers: You should use Explorer to look for a Readme.txt file (double click to read) and follow the instructions to install new drivers. Otherwise, look for a file called Install.exe, Install.bat, Setup.exe or Setup.bat and run that by double clicking. Finally, if none of the above are found, some drivers ship with only a .INF file. You should look for file name finishing with .INF, rightclick to bring up a menu, and leftclick "Install" on that menu. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 2. Matrox M3D graphics card owners: the latest drivers are included on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CDROM in the directory "DK-D3DMatrox M3D drivers". Double click setup.exe to install. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 3. Videologic Apocalypse graphics card owners, using the NEC/Videologic PowerVR(TM) PCX2 chipset: the latest drivers are included on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CDROM in the directory "DK-D3DPowerVR drivers". Right click on the .INF file and select Install from the menu. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 4. PCX2 chipset card owners : (including Videologic Apocalypse, Matrox M3D) There is a known problem, during very busy scenes in possess creature mode, in which the bottom of the screen flickers black squares for a small time. This occurs even with recent drivers, and there is no known solution at this time. This is a rare graphical glitch only, and does not effect the gameplay. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 5. nVidia RIVA128 graphics card owners : You may experience some minor texture errors at the edges of floor or ceiling tiles. To fix this, right click the Desktop, left click Properties, and left click the RIVA128 tab. Now set the "Automatically generate MIPMAP levels" box to 0. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 6. Diamond Viper 330 owners: You will need the latest version of the drivers to run Dungeon Keeper Direct3D. These are contained on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CD under the directory DK-D3DDriversDiamond Viper330. To install, double click the file viper0023p.exe and follow the on screen instructions. Also see the note to nVidia RIVA128 owners above concerning MIPMAP levels. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 7. 3Dfx Voodoo Card owners : (including Orchid Righteous, Diamond Monster3D, ...) You will need the latest version of the drivers to run Dungeon Keeper Direct3D. The latest reference drivers v2.15, are contained on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CD under the directory DK-D3DDrivers3dfx Voodoo. To install, double click the file d3rtvg.exe and follow the instructions in the readme. These drivers are supplied by 3Dfx and will work on many Voodoo based cards, however you are strongly recommended to use very recent drivers provided by your board manufacturer if possible. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 8. ATI Rage Pro owners : You may experience graphical problems with driver versions before v4.35. If so, you are advised to use the latest version of the drivers to run Dungeon Keeper Direct3D. These are contained on the Dungeon Keeper Gold CD under the directory DK-D3DDriversATI Rage Pro. To install, double click the file w95-2278.exe and follow the instructions on screen. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 9. 3Dfx Voodoo Rush (TM) chipset card owners : There is a known problem, in which the frontend of the game sometimes appears darkened. This occurs even with recent drivers, and there is no known solution at this time. The frontend still functions correctly, and this does not effect the graphics in the game or gameplay. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 10. 3Dfx Voodoo chipset card owners with Pentium Pro (TM) processors : There is a known problem, only seen on PentiumPro machines, in which horizontal lines of corruption occasionally occur in sprites, such as flames around the Dungeon Heart, and dotted lines occasionally appear on the Dungeon floor. This does not effect the gameplay at all. The problem occurs even with recent drivers, and there is no known solution at this time. ** If you have difficulty installing drivers, please contact your graphics card supplier ** 11. 3DLabs Permedia2 chipset card owners : (including Diamond FireGL1000Pro) If you have old drivers, you may experience minor graphical problems, including a stippling effect on flames. The visual quality can be enhanced by using most recently available drivers, giving you full "alpha support", which is needed for high quality transparency effects. ========== 5.0 LATEST ========== For the latest news see Bullfrog's website: http://www.bullfrog.co.uk or http://www.bullfrog.ea.com -------------------- Electronic Arts Customer Service in the UK are available Monday to Thursday from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. and on Friday from 9.00 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. on (01753) 546465, or we can be contacted via E-MAIL on; uk-support@ea.com.
