THE AIM OF THE ILLUSTRATIONS to the present volume is to give a general idea of ancient Egyptian art: an idea of the landscape in which the buildings erected in the course of three thousand years were, and still are, situated, and an idea of the buildings themselves and their component parts. The reader can thus deduce the details from the living whole and will not, as is the case with so many previous books on Egyptian art, have to guess from details what the whole may be or have been.
