Einar Englund was by most accounts Finland's greatest Neo-Classical composer; some said, the greatest Finnish composer after Sibelius. The latter did in fact encourage him, after having been twigged to an upcoming radio broadcast of the Piano Quintet. Englund was just out of his musical studies at the Sibelius Academy, but his composition teacher, Bengt Carlson, felt the Piano Quintet was far beyond a student work. In conversation with Sibelius, Englund played it down, but the older composer interrupted him with "Don't belittle your work. It is the best thing you've done so far, and in the future you will look back on it as your first milestone."

Englund, who had a quiet, dry sense of humor, used to say he was a Franck pupil, since Carlson, his teacher, in turn studied with D'Indy, who studied with Franck. Certainly there's Franck in this very early work, but there's also the burgeoning Neo-Classicism that would become the composer's distinctive voice. As he put it years later, it had plenty of Franck, Brahms, Reger and Ravel--but the cocktail, of course, was Englund.
