In the last decade, newly discovered documents have offered tantalizing glimpses of the woman. But interpretation of evidence often produces bitter debate. On the one side, Einstein is a scientific saint, and accepting Mileva as his equal would be blasphemous. On the other side, there is solid proof that Albert treated his wife disgracefully, raising the suspicion that he viewed Mileva's career with equal disregard. In this brief investigation of the facts, Mileva's life story is divided into three periods, each defined by her changing relationship with Albert. The epilogue reviews the events leading to her rediscovery in the late 1980s. The Early Years (1875-1902) Mileva Maric is born just before Christmas. Her parents dote on her and nickname her "Mitza." She limps because of a displaced hip, a birth defect unusually common in the region. As a youngster, she shows a gift for math and languages, painting and music. Mileva's family is fairly wealthy, and she receives superior schooling. When Mileva turns 15, her father gets special permission for her to take classes at an all-male prep school. She keeps to herself, and earns the highest grades in both math and physics. To continue her education, Mileva goes to Zurich, one of the few European cities with a university that accepts women. You must continue with your investigations - how proud I will be to have a little Ph.D. for a sweetheart, while I remain a completely ordinary person! --Albert to Mileva, September, 1900 In the summer of 1896, she begins studying medicine. By October, she has switched to the university's Technical Institute (ETH). She is nearly 21, and only the fifth woman to be accepted by the ETH. One of her classmates is Albert Einstein. He is 17, a boy barely worth noticing. Her first year is an academic success. But she starts her second year with a semester in Heidelberg. Mileva and Albert exchange letters while she is away. She describes, in great detail, the satisfactions of her studies. In return, Albert calls her a "little runaway," telling her to "come back soon." She returns, and by the spring of 1899, all formality is gone. He calls her Dollie. She dubs him Johnny. They embark on a "modern" love affair. Her parents are tolerant, knowing that Mileva's marital prospects are few, due to her intelligence and disability. His parents oppose the relationship on every level. She is too old, too book-ish, lame, a Slovene, not Jewish. The greater the opposition, the more Mileva protects Einstein, eventually placing his interests before her own. He demands all her time. She sacrifices her studies as well as her friends. In the summer of 1900, they both fail their final exams. He somehow gets a diploma, but is one of the few graduates without a job waiting. While he looks for work, she supports him emotionally and financially.
