Description
Regional and national geographic areas will sometimes reflect a love of a given instrument or instrumental variant not found elsewhere. So it is, for instance, with the Spanish guitar during the 16th century, when the lute was favored everywhere else in Europe. So it was as well with the virginal, a small version of the harpsichord that only employs one plucked string per note. This produced a softer, sweeter tone than the popular, full-bodied Flemish harpsichords of, say, the Blanchet family of instrument makers. The virginal is not especially good at recreating music requiring massive sonority, but it excels in dances, and song transcriptions. Which is exactly what harpsichordist Sophie Yates uses it for on this fine release.
