If you receive messages about not having enough memory or if Encarta World English Dictionary runs slowly, try one or more of the following procedures. * Enable additional virtual memory. 1 Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2 Double-click System. 3 Click the Performance tab. 4 In the Advanced Settings section, click the Virtual Memory button. 5 Select Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (Windows 95/98 only) (Recommended) -OR- Increase the minimum and maximum virtual memory. * Quit all unnecessary programs. * Clean up ("defragment") your hard disk. Run a clean up program such as Disk Defragmenter, which is included with Windows 95/98. Note Disk Defragmenter does not work with FAT32 partitions. * Ensure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC Level 2. Check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive. * Add more RAM to your computer. To run the Encarta products you need at least: * 16 megabytes (MB) for Windows 95; 24 MB recommended * 32 MB for Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0; 48 MB recommended * Optimize the performance of Windows 95/98. For complete details, consult your Windows manual or online documentation. * Optimize the performance of your CD-ROM drive. Windows 95 provides settings for CD-ROM caching and for accessing various CD-ROM drive speeds via the System Control Panel. See the Help topic Adjusting the settings of your CD-ROM drive to learn about ways to improve the performance of your CD-ROM drive. ======================================================================== CORRUPTED FILES IN ENCARTA WORLD ENGLISH DICTIONARY AFTER INSTALLATION [colour=blue]If you suspect or detect that there is a corrupted file in Encarta World English Dictionary, uninstall Encarta World English Dictionary and then reinstall. To uninstall Encarta World English Dictionary: 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs. 3. In the dialog box that appears, click Encarta World English Dictionary in the program list. 4. Click Add/Remove. To reinstall Encarta World English Dictionary: 1. Turn on your computer and CD-ROM drive. 2. Insert the Encarta World English Dictionary compact disc into the drive. 3. Follow the setup instructions that appear on your screen. ======================================================================== Display Problems In some situations, Encarta World English Dictionary may encounter video display problems when using high-resolution video drivers from various video card manufacturers. The problems include: * Images appearing grainy or having "glitches." Most problems can be fixed by obtaining new drivers from your video card manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer of your video card to determine if there are newer versions available. You can locate their phone number within the manuals that came with your video card or personal computer. In other cases, Encarta World English Dictionary may look bad on 256-color displays when other applications that also use 256 colors are placed over the Encarta World English Dictionary window. Some things you can do to alleviate this include: * Run your display at a color depth greater than 256 colors.
