Plot summary




Other than reuniting co-stars Sammo Hung and Lam Ching-ying from the classic 1981


original, this horror-comedy from Hong Kong filmmaker Ricky Lau bears no linear


relation to its famous predecessor. Hung plays Po, a poor man who is in love with


a girl named Little Chu (Yip Wing-cho). The problem is that Po must come up with a


huge dowry to please his intended brides father if he expects to marry her. He can


not afford it, but one night he runs into a female ghost who promises to help Po


keep Chu from the wealthy heel attempting to steal her away, if he provides some


assistance to the spectres mother. Unfortunately, Pos Taoist master (Ching-ying)


tries to exorcise the ghost. He finally agrees to help her, but Chus rich suitor


hires a sorcerer to send a pair of zombies filled with cockroaches to kill him. It


does not work, so the sorcerer captures Pos soul and puts it into the body of a


piglet. Pos master manages to free his soul and reunite it with his body, but the


sorcerer counters by casting a spell on Pos father and sending him after his terrified


son with murderous intent. Less interested in gross-out scenes than many of its ilk


(although the cockroaches may make some viewers squirm), the film manages to be passably


amusing, if somewhat short on both the memorably inventive comedy and gruesome set


pieces which marked Hungs original.
