Description

Publication Date: November 25, 2009 | ISBN-10: 0313352550 | ISBN-13: 978-0313352553 | Edition: 2

Expanded to two volumes, the comprehensively updated new edition, Encyclopedia of Animal Rights and Animal Welfare: Second Edition is an extraordinary publishing event. It remains the only reference to cover the entire scope of animal rights and welfare from a global interdisciplinary perspective, with an international team of contributors assembled by Marc Bekoff covering animal treatment issues in the United States, China, India, Kenya, Australia, and many other nations.

With a focused emphasis on fairness and justice for animals evident on every page, Encyclopedia of Animal Rights and Animal Welfare: Second Edition offers clear explanations of hot-button topics like puppy mills, endangered species in zoos, no-kill shelters, dog fighting, factory farming and disease, veganism, conservation ethics, wildlife contraception, and more. The encyclopedia also explores a range of religious, ethical, and philosophical views on using animals, as well as the latest research on animal cognition and sentience. The work helps readers understand the different viewpoints of animal welfare advocates who want to improve conditions for animals and animal rights activists who don't want animals used at all.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up—This collection of 207 essays presents the latest scientific research and writings about the growing interest in animals as sentient creatures that deserve equal treatment and have intrinsic value. The topics include activism, animal-human interaction, genetic engineering, experimentation, speciesism, and zoos. The signed essays, which emphasize philosophy and ethics, vary in length as well as in vocabulary level; many will elicit emotional reactions. Longer entries contain subdivisions, and all have a list of suggested readings. Black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout. Highlights of the volumes are a chronology of historical events in animal protection and an extensive list of resources on animal rights and animal welfare. Some topics, such as puppy mills, are current news items and will be understood by general readers, but other essays will only appeal to advanced science students. All considered, the plethora of information gathered here makes this set a weighty addition to science collections.—Patricia Ann Owens, Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel, Illinois

From Booklist
Compiled by Bekoff (emeritus biology professor, University of Colorado–Boulder), a prolific author of works on animals including the Encyclopedia of Human-Animal Relationships (2007), this second edition provides revised coverage of the 1998 set plus much new material. The 207 entries are alphabetically arranged and cover a broad range: animal blessing rituals, legal issues, predator control, religious attitudes toward animals, urban wildlife, and animals and war, among many other topics. Each entry includes a bibliography of print and, occasionally, online sources. There are no entries devoted to individuals, although major figures are mentioned throughout the text. The encyclopedia concludes with a brief chronology of historical events and a helpful section listing print and online resources. Some black-and-white photographs are interspersed throughout the text, and a keyword index provides easy access to the two volumes. Although the editor notes that the majority of entries are written in a “neutral manner,” animal lovers will be pleased to learn that “a few are more personal, because it is very difficult to be impartial when writing about our animal kin.” A superb reference resource for students, general readers, researchers, or others wanting to learn about our relationship with the nonhuman world.
