Erdenklang - Komputerakustische Klangsinfonie
Erdenklang (aka Blue chip orchestra) - Komputerakustische Klangsinfonie ,LP ,1982, Austria Erdenklang were Hubert Bognermayr and Harald Zuschrader. In the mid to late seventies, these guys were part of a very symphonic, progressive rock group called Eela Craig. Their music was very lush and majestic, build on a foundation of keyboard sounds. They released five albums, none of which are available on CD, which are now collectors items of some value, commanding upto $30 for the last four and upto $500 (!) for the first self-titled one. After the dissolution of Eela Craig in the early eighties, B and Z got together and released three works, the first one of which was the first ever release on the Erdenklang label. It was called Computerakustische Klangs- sinfonie, and featured synthesized instruments playing acoustic sounds. A couple of lesser known works were also released, both of which have very religious overtones, much like gospel music and chants played to the backing of keyboards. There is a fair bit of spoken prayer in these two, which tends to make them somewhat unaccessible to the average electronic aficionado. Later, they named themselves the Blue Chip Orchestra, and have released two CDs so far, both of which feature highly orchestral work, and are excellent. High quality electronic/space floating music, sometimes much orchestrated sometimes more improvisational.By all means it will appeal to all Tangerine Dream,Klaus Schulze fans. Eela Craig-One Niter ,LP/CD,1976,Austria It took EELA CRAIG five years between full blown LPs. They did release a single in 1974 ("Stories"/"Cheese") that totally turned away from the bluesy/jazzy psych and prog of their debut, and was to define their symphonic prog sound of the late '70s (specifically "Hats of Glass" as both were re-recorded for that album). By 1976, they were finally recording for Vertigo Records in Germany, giving them exposure outside of Austria. The band now started going hog-wild on all sorts of equipment. The original LP shows the band members with all their gear on the back cover (an analog keyboard lover's dream come true). There's vocalist/keyboardist Hubert Bognermayr (hard to miss him since he was partially bald, although he was always like that, and he was still in his 20s when "One Niter" came out) with a Hammond organ, two VCS-3 synthesizers, a Wurlitzer electric piano, and a couple keyboards I can't recognize (looks like I see an RMI electric piano, but can't be sure). Bassist Gerhard Englisch is standing next to an amplifier, and two bass guitars are standing by it (including a Rickenbacker). Frank Hueber is seen playing his drum set. Vocalist and guitarist Fritz Riedelberger is seen holding a Gibson "The Les Paul", keyboardist/flautist Hubert Schnauer is seen standing next to a vibraphone, and a custom made Mellotron 400 courtesy of EMI, with a black top, and Harald Zuschrader is seen playing his Mini Moog, and although hard to see, I think it's a Hohner D-6 clavinet (as plent is used throughout the album). This photo is taken in some place in the countryside (I wouldn't mind living), with some overgrown vegetation, and some small valley down below. Love the picture of giant sculpture of a telephone, makes me wonder where that is, and if it's still there? Well, not only was the band going hog-wild on their equipment, it also shows they now had three guys handling keyboard duty as well as the usual other prog rock gear. They were going for a more funky-brand of prog rock, often dominated by the clavinet. "Circles" is a four movement suite that starts off with some really loud and startling Mellotron brass, before things quiet down with some synthesizer and very pleasant flute. Then they go in to a killer jam dominated by clavinet and Moog. Then they go in to a gentle ballad. This is where the vocals first appear, courtesy of guitarist Fritz Riedelberger. Then they go back to the Mellotron and pick up speed. "Loner's Rhyme" is the track Hubert Bognermayer handles the vocal duties. The band goes in to an extended solo, including some great Moog solos and funky clavinet, as well as Hammond organ. "One Niter Medley" is a five movement suite, starts off with synthesizer and Mellotron, before you hear a short song from Bach with an experiment in phasing. After that the band goes in to funky jam, before mellowing out with string synths. "Venezuela" is a nice acoustic song with Fritz Riedelberger handling vocals. "Way Down" starts off with some really nice flute and some droning keyboard in the background. Once again they go in to a funky jam before mellowing out and the vocals kick in. A totally wonderful album to have in your collection. Possibly their best effort. Each track contains a smattering of vocal samples with heavy layers of synthesiser strings and bubbling electronica. However while Blue Chip Orchestra’s Native American themed album was more introspective and ambient, Red Buddha would not sound out of place in many world trance clubs. Tracks are epic explorations of Western dance music in a Far Eastern world. Thrown into the mix are vocal snippets from the region — ranging from guttural Buddhist chants to Tibetan folk singing — while Lenny Mac Dowell contributes synth and bamboo flute playing. These elements occasionally sound foreign in the mix, as if they were added after the main composition instead of the music being built around them, but for the most part the arrangements are seamless. While the opening track lulls you into the album, the pace is heightened by Trip to Lhasa HO and Freedom for Tibet with their thumping drumloops. Basslines on tracks such as Gong Chi and Walk to the Inside are reminiscent of Delerium’s albums. Double X-Dee expanded his sound into India on the follow-up album Siddhartha In Space, which features a host of live singers and performers. While the group's strong trance-rhythm focus won’t appeal to everyone, if you enjoyed Professor Trance or need a Far Eastern album with more edge, look no further than Red Buddha. Tracklisting: 01. (Christian Salvesen) Takes Your Breath Away!, May 8, 2000 By "nyrube" (Culver City, CA USA) If you are thinking about getting into Native American music, start here. This group is not only original, but each song on this cd is very different. They can move you fast, slow you down, pick you up, or ease you mind. If you are a Native American cd collector, this one is a must for your collection. Buy it and enjoy it over and over again. For those who truly appreciate Native American culture..., March 22, 2006 By Ursula Raphael "astradaemon" (Western Michigan, USA) First of all, this entire CD tells a Dakota myth of creation - every track is part of the story...with that in mind, it makes perfect sense to have tracks that contain elements such as winds and fire crackling. If you are looking for something that is strictly music, don't buy this CD - there is plenty of other new age electronica to choose from. If you enjoy going to pow-wows, and other Native American events, you will appreciate the detail put into this album. This isn't just a CD you pop into your car for background noise - this is a journey you become a part of. I loved this album so much, when my son was being delivered into this world, we had this CD playing...I think track#6 was playing when he actually made his appearance...anyway, if you are trying to expose your children to different cultures and music, this is a good album to start with. My son is only 7 mos old now, but he loves listening to every track. I have yet to find another album I enjoy as much as this one, for this particular genre. Gather round the fire now!, June 2, 2001 By PHP 46 (Taj Mahal) Hard to believe this is the product of some folks from Austria..in fact, this could well be the last item from them as I understand, as the main brain behind this is now dead :( Really though, this is a wonderful statement of combining Plains Indian music and chants with some more western interpretation. I assume that a lot of it is authentic field recordings, complete with the crackle of flames and popping of coals in the fire and a huge thunderstorm that you better watch out for, as it will about blow yer speakers right out of the cabinet when it Kabooms!! Beautiful images of Indian civilisation are present in the soundscape, you feel like you were there for an hour or so. A really lovely armchair trip to the past, not in the same league as say R. Carlos Nakai, but very, very satisfying. Powerful, Moving, Stirring, Haunting, June 26, 1999 This is the most powerful and moving Native American/Contemporary blend CDs I have listened to yet. It is far better than Cusco's light and airy Apurimac III. It touchs your inner emotions. It is one of my favorite CDs.
