Ernest Bloch - P Qnt No 1 - Pro Arte Qt, A Casella, p (1933) [Philidor; FLAC]

Ernest Bloch's music was lost to view when other classical styles came to the fore in the latter half of the 20th century, but his brand of aggressive expressivivity is slowly making its way back into fashion. No current recording of his First Piano Quintet approaches the ferocity and brilliance of this one, made in 1933. The Pro Arte Quartet, originally a Belgian ensemble, was known for its championing of (then) modern music, as well as the classics. It had a bracing, lean tone, great precision, plenty of color, and a lot of energy. This is one of their best releases, along with the composer/pianist, Alfredo Casella; and if you can get around the sound, the music will leap up and grab you by the throat. And best of all, since it's the Internet, you can't find me to sue for bruising.
