Description

Most if not all of the written polyphony of 13th century Scotland, composed for the Roman Catholic Church, has long since vanished at the hands of fire-eyed Presbyters who considered it extremely sinful. By chance, one manuscript was copied and sent abroad to the German States, where it remained over the centuries. It's from this document that all the anonymous works on this disc are drawn. The musical style is conservative, and looks back to what the Notre Dame School was doing about a century before, with vertical counterpoint at the octave or the fifth--and occasionally, the seventh, for some sonic bite. The performances are immaculate, although some critics consider the use of instruments to replace or double a vocal line as wrongheaded. Still, it's a fascinating window on more music from an early form of Western polyphony, well-composed and singular in style.

Transfers are made at 768 kBits/s, directly from the disc.
