Excerpt:

How do you come up with a great idea that adds real value to the world? Better yet, how do you recognize that idea from all the terrible ideas that sound like great ones?

Whenever I have an idea that I want to turn into a company, my first instinct is to go out and conquer it. I want to take action! I wake up in the morning and shove my wife. “Honey, listen to this. I’ve got a great idea.” If I had a dime for every time I have told her that… Wait, that’s an interesting startup idea. “Honey!”

However, I have come to learn that the worst thing I can do as an entrepreneur is to marry the first ideas that pop in my head. Why?

Because no matter what that idea is, after letting it sit for a day or two, the novelty often wears off and reality sets in. Many times I have refused to believe this. I get a high every time I come up with an idea that I think is brilliant. In the past, this high would lead to building the idea before testing the validity of it. I’d put in weeks or months of effort, or sometimes tens of thousands of dollars only to discover how bad the idea was when nobody wanted what I built.

It took years before I understood deeply the concept that that picking the right startup idea will almost always take up-front iteration, testing, and brutally honest assessments. The sooner I accepted that finding my best ideas was a process, not an event, the better off I was.
