Finisterre è un gruppo musicale italiano di Genova attivo dal 1993. La loro proposta musicale si basa essenzialmente su di un crossover di diversi stili. Rock, musica elettronica, progressive, classica, jazz, folk, ambient, contemporanea e minimalismo sono alcune delle influenze che i Finisterre inseriscono nelle loro composizioni.
I Finisterre sono autori di 4 dischi in studio e 2 dal vivo e hanno effettuato concerti in Italia, Francia, Spagna, Stati Uniti e Messico.
I lavori dei Finisterre sono stati sempre recensiti da tutte le maggiori riviste musicali italiane ed estere e il gruppo nel corso degli anni ha ottenuto un ottimo responso di critica, pubblico e vendite diventando uno dei più seguiti e apprezzati nuovi gruppi italiani dediti al genere progressive rock.

Il gruppo si forma nell'aprile 1993 e comprende Fabio Zuffanti (basso, voce), Stefano Marelli (chitarre, voce), Boris Valle (tastiera), Davide Laricchia (batteria, voce) e Sergio Grazia (flauto). Tra giugno e settembre iniziano i primi concerti in Liguria. All'inizio del 1994 la formazione registra il primo demo tape contenente 2 pezzi (Asia e Cantoantico). Laricchia lascia il gruppo e arriva Marco Cavani (batteria); nel giugno dello stesso anno i Finisterre vengono messi sotto contratto dall'etichetta Mellow Records e registrano il loro primo CD omonimo che uscirà nel gennaio dell'anno dopo. Nell'estate 1995 il gruppo è in tour e Cavani e Grazia abbandonano il gruppo sostituiti da Francesca Biagini (flauto) e Marcello Mazzocchi (batteria). Nel 1996, sempre per la Mellow Records registrano il secondo album, In Limine. Marcello Mazzocchi lascia il gruppo sostituito da Andrea Orlando.
Nel luglio 1997 i Finisterre effettuano una tournée in USA suonando in North Carolina al Progday 1997 con l'aggiunta, in veste di ospite, del flautista Sergio Grazia (già presente nel primo CD). A settembre esce il disco dal vivo (registrato durante concerti effettuati in Italia e Francia) Ai margini della terra fertile per la Mellow Records. Il gruppo fa altri concerti in Francia nel 1998, dopo essere passato all'etichetta italiana Iridea Records e aver registrato In ogni luogo. Nel 1998 entra in formazione il tastierista Agostino Macor.
Il gruppo effettua nel 2000 concerti in Italia e Spagna. A settembre entra in formazione la cantante Raffaella Callea. Nello stesso anno esce anche Live at Progday 1997, edizione limitata a 500 copie per la Proglodite Records della registrazione del concerto del 1997 al Progday. Nel 2001, i Finisterre effettuano una tournée di 10 date in Messico, dopodiché l'attività musicale dei Finisterre viene temporaneamente sospesa per permettere ai suoi componenti di dedicarsi ad altri progetti musicali. In seguito a questo temporaneo scioglimento il gruppo decide di non avvalersi più delle collaborazioni musicali di Orlando e Callea.
L'anno dopo il gruppo riprende l'attività a tempo pieno. Valle ritorna in pianta stabile affiancando Macor alle tastiere. L'altro ritorno che si registra è quello del batterista Cavani (presente del primo CD). La reunion del gruppo viene festeggiata con un concerto speciale nell'ottobre 2002 a Milano. Nel novembre 2004 esce, dopo due anni di lavoro, il nuovo cd La meccanica naturale prodotto da Franz Di Cioccio per la sua etichetta Immaginifica.
Nel 2007 il gruppo si scioglie per l'uscita del chitarrista Stefano Marelli; Boris Valle, Fabio Zuffanti, Agostino Macor e Maurizio Di Tollo danno allora vita al gruppo dei Rohmer, che nel 2008 pubblica l'album omonimo. Nel 2011, i Finisterre si riformano in occasione del Festival Crescendo di Royan (Francia).

FINISTERRE are an Italian progressive rock band that formed in Genoa in April 1993. Their music is an eclectic mix of styles and they have spawned a significant number of offshoots. The original line-up consisted of Fabio Zuffanti (bass, vocals), Stefano Marelli (guitars, vocals), Boris Valle (keyboards), Marco Cavani (drums) and Sergio Grace (flute). During the summer of 1993 they performed their first concerts, then signed to Mellow Records in June 1994. They released their self-titled debut album, widely regarded as a classic of modern Italian symphonic progressive music, in January of the following year.
Cavani and Grace subsequently quit the band during 1995. Along with their replacements, Francesca Biagini (flute) and Marcelo Mazzocchi (drums), FINISTERRE produced their second and arguably best album ''In Limine'' (1996). This is a radical and diverse work comprised of classical, jazz, folk, avant-garde and even electronic influences. Mazzocchi then left to be replaced by Andrea Orlando, the band's third drummer in as many years. Biagini also exited but original flautist Sergio Grace filled in for the group's appearance at the ProgDay 1997 festival in North Carolina. Later in 1997 they performed concerts in Italy and France, followed by further French gigs during 1998 that resulted in their first live album ''Live - Ai Margini Della Terra Fertile''. They then signed to Iridea Records and released their third studio album ''In Ogni Luogo'', which has a fairly modern sound and contains some guest female vocals.
The year 2000 witnessed further live activity by the group in Italy and Spain, singer Raffaella Callea joined, and ''Live At ProgDay 1997'' saw its release in a limited edition of 500 copies for Proglodite Records. Their third live album, ''Storybook'' (MoonJune Records), features the same recording with the addition of their cover of the PFM classic ''Altaloma''. After a 10-date tour of Mexico in 2001, the band took an extended break to allow the members to pursue other musical projects, such as LAZONA and LA MASCHERA DI CERA. Zuffanti had already been involved in projects outwith FINISTERRE since the 1990s and, under the name of HOSTSONATEN, had released a string of what were basically solo albums. After another split in 2007, several members formed ROHMER and released an album of the same name in 2008.

Some of Zuffanti's solo works feature on FINISTERRE'S ''Harmony Of The Spheres'' (2002), a compilation of previously unreleased rare and live tracks. When they reformed after the first split in 2002 it was without Callea and Orlando, and the band spent the next two years working on their last studio album. ''La Meccanica Naturale'' (2004) was produced by Franz Di Cioccio (drummer and founding member of PFM) for his Immaginifica label. This album features four of the original line-up, with Cavani back behind the drums. It's also noteworthy for the absence of a flautist and for the inclusion of a second keyboardist, Agostino Macor. Di Cioccio's liner notes for ''La Meccanica Naturale'' draw an interesting allegory that seems to sum up the band perfectly. Apparently during ancient times the word ''finisterre'' was used to denote curiosity for known boundaries, and Di Cioccio compares this to FINISTERRE who produce ''a music without borders''.

E’ un vero piacere ascoltare i genovesi Finisterre dal vivo, quella che da più parti venne definita come la nostra miglior band degli ultimi 25 anni si rivela ancora una vera delizia da palco: tra le prime uscite della neonata etichetta statunitense Moonjune vediamo spuntare questo live già ascoltato qualche anno fa. “Storybook” è infatti il resoconto della memorabile esibizione che la band di Fabio Zuffanti regalò al pubblico del ProgDay Festival (North Carolina) nel 1997, immortalata poi su un disco ad edizione limitata edito da Proglodite di Peter Renfro. Con lui responsabile del cd è anche Leonardo Pavkovic, duo che ringraziamo per averci offerto un meraviglioso affresco da parte di una band che a quanto pare non c’è più, “congelata” e forse in attesa di uno scossone “termico”.
In ogni caso il live in questione presenta il quintetto ligure in splendida forma (come già nel precedente “Live…Ai margini della terra fertile”): basta ascoltare l’opener “In Limine” per capire la grazia della loro musica, progressive ad alto voltaggio ed altrettanta intensità che riusciva a prendere tanto dagli amati anni ’70 senza ricorrere a discutibili “clonazioni” o ad ingombranti recuperi. L’influenza della PFM si sente ma la carica personale dei cinque è fuori discussione, alternando la delicatezza di pastelli acustici di matrice folk, momenti più ruvidi dominati dalle chitarre di Stefano Marelli, aperture sinfoniche ed episodi più lunatici e rarefatti sorretti dal pregevole lavoro di Boris Valle, mago dell’analogico con tanto di mellotron e piano elettrico in bella vista: tutto questo è la poderosa “Orizzonte degli eventi”, magistrale vetta compositiva di grande originalità. Era questo lo stato di massima espressione dei Finisterre, dopo verrà il controverso (ma assolutamente non disprezzabile) “In ogni luogo” ed un periodo più o meno “sabbatico” colmato almeno da numerosi progetti paralleli.
Perfetta “Hispanica”, momento di calore “latino” in cui svetta il pimpante flauto di Sergio Grazia e la verve della sezione ritmica, Andrea Orlando alle percussioni e Zuffanti al basso, duo che nell’eccentrica “Macinaacqua, Macinaluna” brilla per ispirazione con l’intera band: esplode la vena hard e si scontra con le radici classiche e le visioni elettroniche del moog, creando un vorticoso susseguirsi di contrasti; non possiamo non notare come anche le parti vocali dal vivo ne guadagnino in sicurezza ed espressività.
Un’impostazione del genere è tutt’altro che ingombrante, specialmente oggi, in un periodo che vede il prog italiano guardare di nuovo verso il passato (The Watch, Torre dell’Alchimista, Submarine Silence), privilegiando solo in parte la ricerca, concentrandosi più nell’intento di toccare certe nostalgiche corde emotive.
La band compie un dovuto omaggio a chi come loro una ventina d’anni prima aveva stregato il pubblico d’oltreoceano, lo fa con una versione sentita e toccante di quel gioiello di “Altaloma” della Premiata che non ha bisogno di ulteriori commenti. Quelle stesse atmosfere malinconiche ritornano nella titanica “Asia”, brano più breve ma incalzante ed avvolgente, pieno di mistero e di quell’arcano fascino che da sempre rende “arte” il nostro amato progressive. “Phaedra” viaggia sulle stesse coordinate ed offre alla band la possibilità di farsi ascoltare in termini solisti: fatto sta che le atmosfere corali rendevano eccelso il lavoro dei cinque genovesi e questo lungo brano ne è ottima prova, grande energia, drammatici squarci sinfonici ed iniezioni elettriche, inserti di omaggi a Genesis e King Crimson, cavalcata da cardiopalma e una prestazione collettiva da autentico brivido.
L’intenso finale della magnetica “Canto Antico” è un epitaffio di gran classe ed immensità, a testimonianza di una mia costante, cocciuta ed intima convinzione: in questo genere di “cose” l’Italia non è seconda a nessuno, tantomeno lo erano i Finisterre.
Anche se la loro eredità è raccolta dai vari progetti di Zuffanti, Marelli & Co., (penso ad Hostsonaten o alla recentissima Maschera di Cera) fatto sta che un certo dispiacere permane nel pensare alla loro assenza. Ed anche questo potrebbe essere un ottimo motivo per accaparrarvi “Storybook”, magari una ventina di copie, non si mai, furti, smarrimenti, inondazioni…

Remarkable live album that starts out slightly muddy, but as the concert progresses the music becomes tighter, more organic with tons of refrences to past classics, ("Fifth of Firth", "Court of the Crimson King", and others). The fact that they do a wonderful rendition of PFM's "Altaloma" shows how masterful these guys can play. If you're not familiar with 'Finisterre', they play in the classic style of Italian symphonic masters like PFM, Banco and Celeste. Superb keyboards, fantastic guitar and bass, nimble drumming and that remarkable flute make these guys for me the #1 Italian band in the business right now. Just check out how incredible they jam during the track "Phaedra" mixing in the songs I mention in the beginning of this review, it's done as smooth as silk. Yet, it's not all thunder. They do have a soft side that shows well live also. They can be so hypnotic! I envy the crowd that got to hear them play and they show their appreciation with great applause. This is one of the best live albums from the past 10 years and if you're any kind of fan of symphonic prog and can get past the singing in Italian, you must get this disc. You won't be disappointed. 4.5 stars!
