Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to Planet Altair-4, home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis), a dutiful robot named Robby…and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

Classic '50s sci-fi, surprisingly but effectively based on The Tempest, with Nielsen's US spaceship coming across a remote planet, deserted except for Pidgeon's world-wearied Dr Morbius (read Prospero), his daughter (Miranda) and their robot Robby (Ariel). Something, it transpires, has destroyed the planet's other inhabitants, and now, as Bard and Freud merge, a monster mind-thing Caliban begins to pick on the spaceship's crew. An ingenious script, excellent special effects and photography, and superior acting (with the exception of Francis), make it an endearing winner.

Il pianeta proibito è un classico del cinema di fantascienza del 1956, diretto da Fred McLeod Wilcox e prodotto dalla MGM, da cui fu tratto un romanzo omonimo scritto da W.J. Stuart e pubblicato nello stesso anno.

La trama è vagamente ispirata alla commedia teatrale La tempesta di Shakespeare. Nella realizzazione della pellicola furono impiegati numerosi effetti speciali della Walt Disney Productions e della musica elettronica, per conferire il carattere alieno del contesto. Il film è ricordato anche per la presenza di un personaggio robotico, Robbie, riproposto in seguito in altre pellicole.

XXIV secolo, l'incrociatore spaziale C-57-D, comandato da John J. Adams, è inviato in missione sul pianeta Altair IV, quarto pianeta della stella Altair, alla ricerca di sopravvissuti della precedente spedizione Bellerofonte, dispersa venti anni prima ma, prima dell'atterraggio, il Professor Edward Morbius, uno dei membri della spedizione scomparsa, viene contattato via radio, sostenendo dapprima di non avere bisogno di aiuto e successivamente di dissuadere il comandante dall'atterrare sul pianeta.

Una volta giunto sulla superficie l'equipaggio è accolto da un robot denominato Robby ed il comandante, il secondo ufficiale Jerry Farman ed il medico di bordo dott. Ostrow vengono condotti alla residenza di Morbius, il quale spiega loro di essere l'unico superstite del Bellerofonte poiché tutti i membri della spedizione, fatta eccezione per lui e per la moglie, deceduta successivamente per cause naturali, sono stati uccisi da una "forza misteriosa" che tuttavia nel tempo non lo ha più minacciato, al pari della figlia Alta, nativa del pianeta, la quale, contravvenendo agli ordini del padre, fa la conoscenza dei tre ufficiali, ed egli ritiene che l'arrivo dell'astronave possa risvegliare la forza.
