Description

DVD: "Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage (Criminal Mix)"

1 hour, 57 minutes and 8 seconds

Performed and filmed 1999/04/16, Cosmosis Productions performed Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage" as a live stage adaptation. The show featured a 7-piece band (feat. Ike Willis as a special guest), 6 modern dancers, a full cast of 10, a larger-than-life Scrutinizer, projections featuring character and digital animation, and quadraphonic sound design.

Produced at the University of Michigan, it tapped the fertile talents of over 50 students from virtually every department of the University. Integrating live and pre-produced video, character and computer animation, installation art, dance musical theater and the rock band The Element (with a guest appearance by Ike Willis).

Shot with 6 DV cameras, the show has been edited and put on DVD.

Cosmosis Productions "Joe's Garage" was the world premier stage adaptation of Frank Zappa's 1979 concept album by the same name. The show explored a censored world of Orwellian "Total Criminalization." Following the exploits of an average teenager named Joe, the audience was led through an odyssey of socially and politically charged scenarios. Religious cults, sexual fetishists, Catholic schoolgirls, rock and roll critics, the record industry, government propaganda and corrupt politicians all became the objects of Zappa's satire.

NOTE: "Mary Don't Go" (lyrics: Joe Grossman [director of the show], music: Jordan Shapiro [musical director of the show]).

Jordan Shapiro was later hired by touring Zappa tribute Project/Object for keyboard duties from 2000-2002.
