Freddy King

Freddy King in 1970

Wikipedia:
Freddie King (September 3, 1934 – December 28, 1976) was an influential American blues guitarist and singer. He is often mentioned as one of "the Three Kings" of electric blues guitar along with Albert King and B.B. King.
Freddie King based his guitar style on Texas and Chicago influences and was one of the first bluesmen to have a multi-racial backing band at live performances. He is best known for singles such as "Have You Ever Loved a Woman" (1960) and his Top 40 hit "Hide Away" (1961). He is also known for albums such as the early, instrumental-packed Let's Hide Away and Dance Away with Freddy King (1961) and the later album Burglar (1974), which displayed King's mature versatility as both player and singer in a range of blues and funk styles.
King became an influential guitarist with hits for Federal Records in the early 1960s. He inspired musicians such as Jerry Garcia, Dickey Betts, Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother Jimmie Vaughan. His influence was also felt in Britain through recordings by blues artists such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, and Chicken Shack. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

From album liner notes:
Freddy King was born in Gilmer, Texas on September 3,1934 and learned to play guitar from his mother Ella Mae and his uncle Leon. He supposedly was playing by the age of six, doing tunes by Lightnin' Hopkins and T-Bone Walker, two of his early influences. As a teenager after his family - moved to Chicago in 1950 he would watch and learn from guitarists like Jimmy Rogers, Hubert Sumlin, Robert Jr. Lockwood and Eddie Taylor, sitting in whenever he could. It would be long before he would be invited to do session work by the folks at Chess and Parrot Records. His first recordings as a front man would be for the short lived El-Bee label in 1956, owned by Mr. Burton who purchased Parrot Records from Al Benson in the same year. In 1960 Freddy signed with the prestigous King label from Cincinnati who issued Freddy with great success on their King subsidiary Federal Records. Freddy made Billboards top 100 on eight of his Federal releases. His biggest hit "Hideaway" which reached the #5 position in Billboard in 1961 was a song he heard Hound Dog Taylor doing. Freddy and Magic Sam with Hound Dog's approval re-worked Mr. Taylor's song and threw in riffs from Jimmy McCracklin's "The Walk" and Ray Anthony's "Peter Gun". Freddy would next record for Atlantic, Cotillion, Leon Russel's Shelter Records and the RSO label. Freddy's Shelter records would establish him on the concert circuit in the 1970's as one of America's top blues performers where he remained until he died of heart failure on December 28, 1976. On this CD we are treated to some fabulous concert performances recorded in France in 1974 and 1975 by the late giant of a man, Freddy King who sadly was only 42 years of age at the time of his death.
