AudioBook - Understanding the Fundamentals of Classical Music
Information: ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Modern Scholar - Great Professors Teaching You! Course: Understanding the Fundamentals of Classical Music: 14 lectures by Professor Richard Freedman Review by audiobookcafe.com : Professor Freedman's audiobook is arranged in specific lecture format according to a pre-designed course syllabus. Produced for The Modern Scholar series, this is a college-level course that presents elements of structure, sound, line, and texture as well as an overview of music history, the art of listening to certain styles of music, as well as learning to hear and appreciate the elements that make up the music we consider to be classical. Much of the text of his lectures is collected in the booklet, although it is more expressive and informative to listen to than to read. Unlike Plotkin, Freedman's lectures include ongoing musical examples to illustrate his points. In the third lecture, for example, he presents a section of Hildegarde von Bingen's 11th century plainsong "o virga ac diadema" from which he explains how little of this early music has been brought into modern time with actual musical notation or explanation as to performance style. He explains in detail, but without belaboring those details, how modern scholars have been able to recreate from the little that exists the single line arc in many forms to recreate plainsong. He moves from that piece to Chopin's ?Prelude in E Minor,? a piano work that adds textural qualities in its separate expressions in the two hands of the pianist. It is clear that the professor knows what he's talking about, and that his examples have been well chosen to amplify his points. It's also nice that he doesn't expect us to simply go out and buy 30 CDs in order to understand what he's writing about, as Plotkin does. Lecture nine, about music history, brings us closer to the Plotkin audiobook in content. It concerns the way that composers reflect on the great music of the past and bring it into their own time, their own style. He examines Beethoven, Bach, Bartok, Stravinsky, Vaughn-Williams, and others in this section of this audiobook, which he refers to as "new music made old." His musical examples are well chosen and underscore his points. This is a true learning experience, well worth the listener's time. ~ By J.
